According to this, speculations are beyond just a game machine chipset, however...Sony's tightlipping the usual PR opportunity that sits in front of them makes me ponder a bit. Disturbing is the lack of development including the nvidia graphics accelerator. The PS3 can come in like a burning spear to the supply and demand burden Microsoft is experiencing for the holiday season. I find the whole business aspect behind these launches more interesting then the hardware/games itself thusfar, lol.

Kinda sounds like Sony is taking a big gamble and hoping it pays out big. Time will tell.

Sounds to me like the person writing that article had no clue what the hell they were talking about. They were reaching to have some sort of conflict.

First of all they made all the faulty parallelism to Sony being like AMD trying to knock off Intel. The Cell processor, as stated by Sony and in that article even, is not made to compete with the Pentium. It is made for use in TV's and set top boxes for decoding HDTV signals and such (aside from the obvious PS3 usage). It is a completely different beast than the Pentium. In that article they state the Cell is intended for Consumer Electronics usage, not PC usage. Intel doesn't make its business off of consumer electronics, it makes PC's.

They also say in that article that multicore chips are less power hungry than single core  Someone should explain to them that 1+1 != 0.5

Overall the article said nothing new, and was merely a good laugh at the incompetence of the author.

CES in 2 weeks should be really good

NEW YORK — For the first time in a decade Sony will be on the main exhibit floor of International CES, with what it claims is the “largest booth at the show,” which will encompass all of the company's divisions.

Mike Fasulo, chief marketing officer, said the objective of the 25,000-square-foot booth is “not only to collaborate across all of our divisions, but to show how consumer electronics is transforming consumer entertainment in the future.”

This, plus the Jan. 5 opening keynote at 8:30 a.m. at the Las Vegas Hilton Theater by Sony chairman/CEO Sir Howard Stringer, makes it the biggest presence the company has had at the show in recent memory.

Fasulo noted that at the entrance of Sony's mammoth booth will be a 220-seat theater which will show short videos of Sony entertainment and technologies in 4K technology and 5.1 Dolby Surround.

The booth itself will feature what Fasulo called several “pillars” which involve all aspects of HDTV, from broadcasting and professional equipment, to branded HDTVs and Blu ray, to other consumer products. PlayStation will also have a featured place at the new CES booth, as well as what Sony calls “e-Entertainment,” the newest developments in cellular phones, Walkman, Vaio PCs and LocationFree TV, among others.

Sony's “Backstage Theater” will also provide tech seminars, exclusive HD programs, Sony recording guests and what Fasulo called, “other special surprises.”

And the mammoth booth will feature a “digital lighthouse that will be a beacon for signaling all attendees towards it,” Fasulo said. It will also feature a broadcast center, but as he put it, “more on that later.”

Maybe their PS3 spokesperson can talk to the Sony HDTV spokesperson and explain how their TV's aren't really HD since they don't do 1080p :)

Better yet, Intel and AMD could educate them on how to ask IBM to make them a processer that's useful as a gaming system (like IBM's regular PPC chips) and not the archaic mess that is the PPE (in the X360/PS3). The only thing that the PPE is useful for is graphics/media processing. And the SPE's are the same, except more crippled. This gen, expect some pretty-ass graphics, but crippled AI and physics compared to what could have been.

HAHAHA I was thinking that when they made that outrageous statement. :p

Yes, and next they are going to say that "true hi-def" is only available using the cell processor, using that as yet another merketing scheme.

or

"your life just is NOT good unless a Sony product (or two) is a part of it" :D

Kutaragi will jump out on stage in a Superman outfit (the big S is for Sony) and he will proceed to run across the room and beat up master chief with his big head. He will then proceed to sodomize master chief (a standard practice for kutaragi) and declare victory in the console wars with a resounding "BOOOM, HEADSHOT!!! 120 FPSSSS BIOTCHES!! PWNED!!!". And then will sodomize the audience until they pre-order the PS3 with $600 that he told them to work extra jobs for. And then he will personally unveil Sony's new line of TVs, which will ONLY display 1080p content and nothing below. They will be "true HD" and capable of 120hz, and will have dual-HDMI input, for picture-in-picture from one PS3.

no no no, there are 4 letters in the word Sony...and 26 letters in the alphabet, therefore you need at least 30 Sony products in your life for it to mean something.

*This is actual Sony Executives / Marketing Division Reasoning*
