http://www.engadget.com/2006/02/27/sony-and-nec-to-combine-optical-businesses-victory-for-blu-ray/

In a move that could have long-reaching consequences for next-gen video and data-storage technologies, Sony and NEC have established a joint venture merging their optical drive businesses. The joint venture was first proposed last November, and is expected to begin business by April 1. While JVs between competitors are not unheard-of, what makes this one particularly unusual is that Sony is, of course, one of the leaders of the Blu-ray group, while NEC sits squarely in the HD DVD camp. The two companies have made no announcements as to what kind of optical drives the new company -- to be known as Sony NEC Optiarc -- will make, but here's one clue: Sony will have a 55% stake in the $1.9 billion company, and it will be managed by one of Sony's execs. Looks to us like Optiarc is going to be a very Blu company, leaving the HD DVD group with one less key supplier of hardware.

Thanks for the post/link.

My only issue with Blu-ray is that it hasn't been proven to be backwards compatible with DVD's (at least last time I checked), and HD-DVD is easily compatible due to structural similarities. Seeing as how my DVD collection just hit 325, I'm leaning towards backwards compatibility.

Its not backward compatible, but I could easily see manufacturs choosing to put backward compatiblity into their own Blue-Ray licensed players. It may make them more expensive, but I am sure most people will be willing to shell out some extra bucks so they can make use of their massive DVD collections. Hopefully we will see this turn into a trend, because it would be sad to see DVD go the way of VHS so quickly.

Plausible assumptions; interesting not-quite-yet-endgame move.

I doubt we'll have to wait long to find out exactly what this means.

As I've said before... If the porn industry chooses a format...that format will be king.

They single handedly killed betamax and their abundance of DVD releases has helped push VHS out the door.

Just calling it like I see it and again...I like to bring up porn anytime it's not already part of the conversation

Blu-Ray FAQ:

2.4 - Will Blu-ray be backwards compatible with DVD?

Yes, several leading consumer electronics companies (including Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and LG) have already demonstrated products that can read/write CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs using a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical head, so you don't have to worry about your existing DVD collection becoming obsolete. Although it's up to each manufacturer to decide if they want to make their products backwards compatible with DVD, the format is far too popular to not be supported. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) expects every Blu-ray Disc device to be backward compatible with CDs and DVDs.
(My emphasis.)

i see blu-ray becoming another sony mini disc, its better, but only in a certain way, and they will charge you out the ass for it, making people less interested in it, and choosing the older, more cheap format that works just as well

i don't see the need for blu-ray right now, nor in the near future, its just a massive storage device on a disk, if HD-DVD is more then 50% cheaper and gives the same visual quality, i'll be buying HD-DVD

Blu Ray will pickup speed, but once people realize that its all propriatary .. they'll back down. Sony has always been good and inventing new media but terrible for forcing it upon you, and terrible for making you buy it their way on their hardware.

The only reason Blu Ray is going into the PS3 is get it out there in hopes to win the format war. In Sony wins.. they'll collect residuals from Hollywood in the billions for the next decade or so.

Personally I cannot wait for HD quality DVD movies.. so I can play them on my 61" HD DLP.. but I do not like the fact that Sony has decided to force this media change NOW. Most people do not own HDTVs, and some are just beginning to convert. The time to upgrade DVD media is probably about 3-4 years out ... and Sony is simply pushing the change, to stay in business.

Good for Sony, bad for consumers. Typical Sony.

You do know that Blu-Ray isn't exactly a Sony format, right?

The porn industry already has its most effecient format yet: the internet.

Personally, while I'm definitely behind higher definition DVD's...I don't notice THAT big of a difference between a really high quality DVD using progressive scan and an HD program.
There's some difference (I know it sounds vague, but it's typically a more vivid color scheme) but it's not like the huge jump from VHS to DVD for example.

I can't find the article but there is a lot of talk about the possible delay of PS3 and Prices of bluray that actually might simply make HD DVD the winner with Bluray being technilogy that is techinically overkill for cost. ONE reason why Microsoft actually got involved in the whole choosing a format. Other reason is obviously it's own xbox360. I'll see if I can find the article though. It was really good.

I'm supporting HD-DVD, for a few reasons:

1. Not Sony. After the whole rootkit thing, I'd rather not support something that feels that they have the rights that no one else does to prevent piracy, and fucking up computers in the process.

2. Lower cost, both with the media and the production costs.

3. Better compatibility.

4. While Blu-Ray does look good on paper, I see it more of a storage medium for PS3 games, PC backups, rather than for movies.

I feel that Blu-Ray may win over a lot of people, especially the movie studios, as it is harder to pirate (due to higher costs). OTOH, I will support HD-DVD. I just want my HD-DVD's now, along with a decent player. I can pre-order one now, but I want to see demo's & actual titles...

I'll take upconverted DVDs, please. I can't believe how much they are screwing consumers. PS3 included. Want to play in HD? Sorry, need a new set! Want to watch our movies in HD? Sorry, most of you need a new set. FUCK YOU! /end rant

yea, piracy can't be stopped. I am going to sit the format war out and will buy into it when the stuff is dirt cheap. By that time hacks will have already been done and it will be just like now.

OFCS. Sony <> "Sony"-BMG. When will people get this straight? It's almost as accurate as blaming ActiveX spyware on Microsoft.

Exactly. There's too much pre-emphasis on HD where none is needed. "My 360 games look like poop!" --- "Well, get an HDTV!"

It used to be that best thing about consoles was the depth to which the developers went without relying on new hardware. These times are accelerating the dark side of convergence.

I agree. All this does is it creates a market for piracy. I am from Brazil and piracy is rampant there. But it used to be a kind of DIY thing. People would borrow each others floppy disks or vhs tapes and that'd be it. Now, because of all the protections, people actually make money selling pirated versions of games and movies, generally made in China where they have the people and the incentives to spend a lot of time subverting these things.. I think that if they spent that kind of money developing exclusive content for consumers they would not only reduce piracy, they'd actually sell more. New online exclusive content, new interactive feature, better cases/booklets/bonuses......

If the PS3 sells like the PS2, Blu-ray will dominate.

I just want Blu-ray to win so I can get bigger discs for my computer.

WAH WAH wah.

Give me HD DVDs
I'm sure some sort of converter will help aleviate your problem soon enough.

YEAAAAH Another excuse for me to pirate a movie!

It MIGHT. It's not as easy. True it would be a huge driving force, but if the system costs too much then no.

Doesn't really matter as long as u got a dvd-drive...

steveip: Are you talking about the supposed HDMI/DVI limitation on upconverting DVD players?

If so you can purchase certain Zenith or Samung players and play upconverted DVD over component.

Guess what? According to the new DRM and all that crap, that converter you are suggesting would be considered illegal.

So is "virtualCD" or anything else that lets you copy a dvd or mimic your cd player, but you can still buy that in a store.

This will be made and you would find it at walmart even.

"My tv doesn't support HDMI but it does component video...all I need it for is for my computer or this cheap ass player I bought...that for some reason hasd HDMI"

Done

Nah, BD disks don't have enough capacity to be cost effective and useful for PC use, and they're WORTHLESS for backup. Too damn slow and not nearly big enough to backup today's hard drives.

Jason

Capacity isn't the issue for BRD/HD-DVD/DVD9 and backups. Reliability is. Optical discs aren't nearly as reliable for long-term storage as everyone assumes.

3. Better compatibility.

That's all conjecture at this point. HD-DVD is not more backwards compatible contrary to popular belief. Both BRD and HD-DVD use hardware hacks to get standard DVD9 compatibility. Both require seperate read lasers for DVD9, each has a slightly different way of handling the DVD9 layer. BRD has it embeded on the same side as the BRD layer, much like a multilayer DVD. HD-DVD simply puts the DVD9 layer on the opposite side. Standalone compatibility is completely up to manufacturers at this point and neither side seems to be too hot on the compability agenda.

The only way in which HD-DVD is more compatible at this point is that their manufacturing methods require upgrades to current factory machines instead of brand new ones.

This sudden alliance isn't all that sudden. The BRD group and the HD-DVD consortium have tried many times in the past half decade to reconcile and work together. There were a few times where it looked like the format wars might actually come to an end, but each group's ego (not just Sony's surprisingly) got in the way and broke down talks.

It's not going to give the same visual quality.

A. It will feature lower bitrates. If you've ever seen HDTV broadcasts, you know how important bitrates are.
B. No 1080p.

Blu-Ray has better visual quality and is much more futureproof with 1080p supported(eventually it will be used). Also apparently Blu-Ray dics can be layered up to 200GB.

HD-DVD is nothing more than a gimmick, but I do expect it to prevail. Simply because I think they will pump out more units, faster, earlier and cheaper than Blu-Ray and dazzle people with marketing.

I hope I am wrong.

At some point wasn't plain jane DVD the same way? Then came DVD Decrypter and noone can even remember that DVD's have copy protection.

Hell, at the local rental store (I'm in south america) ALL the DVD's are region free, on DVD-5's and if I check on my PC they're all totally decrypted. Is this what's going to end up happening to HD-DVD/BluRay?

Probably.

It's the same company. Although it is under different management, it is still the same company. Similar to if I boycotted MS OS's because the XBox sucks. www.sony.com lists the music side and the electronics side...

It's the company philosophy that they think everyone's trying to rip them off, copy protection up the ass, etc.. I don't agree with it. They go overboard on this. A lot of companies do. Sure, it's a problem, but almost every copy protection scheme hurts the paying customers, as the pirates still get a workaround within days of a release. It isn't copy protection for pirates, it's for the non-tech savvy public.

B. No 1080p.

cool that doesn't effect me, and i hope you are right

theres no need to force a format that will cost more and will only apply to 1% of the market, how many people own a TV capable of 1080p?

the size of the disks doesn't matter at all, with how cheap external hard drives are these days i'd much rather have the option of having a portable USB2.0 400gb hard drive then a flimsy 200gb disk that takes longer to write to, still costs a ton, and still offers no clear advantage over HD-DVD disks other then a one up on resolution

also whats to keep a company from recording 1080p to these disks? or is it the player thats incapable of 1080p?
