Good afternoon everyone,

I’ve just gotten into installing and setting up ip cameras. I have a 2TB Seagate hard drive that I’d like to use with the surveillance program Blue Iris. Has anyone had any success doing this?

Depending on how many cameras, what codec they support (mjpeg,264,265), whether you use continuous or triggered recording and how much retention you need, 2TB may not be enough to meet your needs. Or it may be fine we just need more info…

I only have two cameras. I bought a used computer specifically for running blue Iris. It only came with 500gb lol. The cameras are only operating when triggered but, I’d like to be able to store a weeks worth of video with my external drive. I’m using 264 compression. I forget the bit rate but I think 2TB is adequate. The closest thing Seagate is allowing me to do is mirror but, I’d like for videos that are being pushed from the “new” folder to stored to be sent to my external hd.

I have 10x 4mp cameras, and give or take a 10tb gives me a month of recording. So with two cameras depending on the setup and camara characteristics maybe you get a month with two cameras.

Awesome. Are you using an external hard drive? It seems to be frowned upon on ipcameratalk forums.

When it comes to storage...

"go big or go home"

Or start worrying about how much stuff you can't record & store....

I would start with at least 8TB on 2 drives, with one keeping the current recordings, then move the oldest stuff to the other drive in case you wanna review, keep and/or archive it for whatever reason...

Not sure if Blue Iris (or some other SW) can do that for you, or if you'd have to do it manually though (similar to back ups). Perhaps someone could write you a simple shell script that would do it ? :)

I would have thought a weeks worth would be enough to deal with any major criminal activity. If you havent noticed after 7 days...

Like folks that say "you want a 500GB SD card in your dashcam". No you dont, you just need the 30 seconds of relelvant footage.

I set up a security system with 4 cams a few months ago. With the right codec it was doing 1080p video in good quality and sipping data usage with a 2TB HDD.

But all depends if you have bylaws or insurance policy details that stipulate how much data you need to keep?

Exactly, 2TB is more than enough for criminal activity to be recognized and recorded. I was curious how many have used an external drive with BI and if they had recorded directly to it or just sent stored/archived video there. Thank you for your response!

The primary problem with an external drive is that the connection can easily be broken, whether it's a USB drive losing power/connection or a network drive connection lost due to the router dying or something similar. Having an internal drive minimizes failure points. It also allows you to utilize RAID and SMART for redundancy and hard drive health monitoring.

I have 11 cams and use a 800GB SSD for clip storage. It will hold about 3 months worth of clips.
