So I bought an old g3 ibook on ebay for $50 because the seller said it wouldn't boot. After doing some research, I discovered that these ibooks were famous for the dc inverter going bad. I got lucky and this was the case and the replacement part was only $20 on ebay.
I took the entire laptop apart, sorry I forgot to take any pictures, and put in a 60gb 5400rpm hd, 512mb + 128mb memory and an airport card.
While I was looking around on sites, I discovered that the paint on the older ibook can actually be removed very easily with rubbing alcohol. I bought a bottle and after a few hours of scrubbing with a toothbrush, I had 2 clear pieces of the ibook. One cool thing is that all the writing stayed on the plastic, only the paint came off.
I bought a can of metallic blue modeling paint and painted 1 layer on the inside of the two pieces. This is the results, it came out looking very cool because the paint is on the inside of the plastic, not the outside.
Also there are a lot of scratches, nothing I really could do about that.
