So I bought an old g3 ibook on ebay for $50 because the seller said it wouldn't boot. After doing some research, I discovered that these ibooks were famous for the dc inverter going bad. I got lucky and this was the case and the replacement part was only $20 on ebay.

I took the entire laptop apart, sorry I forgot to take any pictures, and put in a 60gb 5400rpm hd, 512mb + 128mb memory and an airport card.

While I was looking around on sites, I discovered that the paint on the older ibook can actually be removed very easily with rubbing alcohol. I bought a bottle and after a few hours of scrubbing with a toothbrush, I had 2 clear pieces of the ibook. One cool thing is that all the writing stayed on the plastic, only the paint came off.

I bought a can of metallic blue modeling paint and painted 1 layer on the inside of the two pieces. This is the results, it came out looking very cool because the paint is on the inside of the plastic, not the outside.

Also there are a lot of scratches, nothing I really could do about that.

That looks pretty cool. The scratches aren't too bad either. It does look a bit patchy on the top down pic though. Some spots are darker, is that visible in person? Cameras sometimes show things far worse than they actually are.

very nice, you're making me want to buy a broken one on ebay to fix up for my brother

yeah the picture makes the paint look different, the spots don't really show up and it kind of looks like a transparent blue plastic.

All I can say is that it's kind of hard to find the parts cheap but it turned out to be worth it for me. For example an airport card on ebay goes for $100 so I got lucky in that mine came with one.

Was fun overall

I did that with my real old 600 that was overclocked. On that one I found a clear palm rest for it. I had it when the 600 first came out(yea I voided the warranty like 2 weeks after getting it). I just sold my ibook g3 800 a few months ago and on that I left it clear(the other was painted black). The only bitch about clear was keeped the little apple on the back held in place and having it so you couldn't see it was glued into place. Nice job.
