So I finally got around to buying a 4k player and a handful of movies. Movies were just a few things I picked out from what Amazon had for next day delivery. Dune 1 & 2, Oppenheimer, and a Lord of the Rings set. Then what do I do? Screw up and watch Dune 1 on regular Blu-Ray. Sat there the whole time thinking this is way better than 4k streaming, then at the end I take the disc out to put it back in the case and realize... oops, wrong disc. Guess I assumed the first disc was the movie and the second was bonus features. But no, the first one was FHD Blu-Ray and the second was the 4k disc.
I started watching Dune 2 last night, and this time I didn't have to make sure I had the right disc. Dune 2 only came with a 4k disc. I don't see a lot of difference in the picture. Both look obviously better than streaming and broadcast TV. Upscaling might have something to do with that. Supposedly the Sony UBP-X700U I bought has a pretty good upscaler. I'm pretty sure I have it set to do the upscaling rather than letting my LG C4 do it. Maybe I ought to try that out too, but I have this hunch the player will do a better job on a disc. Guess I'll also have to see how it does with a DVD.I've done this too. Whoops.
I may well just give away the regular Blu-Ray copies when I get both. I know plenty of people who have a Blu-Ray but not a 4k player. Lots of people more or less quit watching discs after the Netflix disc service and RedBox shut down. One thing to note about UHD Blu-Ray releases is various include the 4K new master (downscaled to 1080p, obviously) on the FHD BD disc. So at least in SDR you'd be getting a better quality version than years prior FHD BD (assuming it was a good transfer).
