I recently picked up my first blu ray drive and find myself kind of at a loss at how to best tweak the picture quality via the ATI CC panel.

There's quite a few options there and when it comes to video quality i'm unsure what most of the options do or how to tweak them.

I've got my 5830 hooked to a Viewsonic VX2250wm via DVI games look great at 1080p but movies not so much. Lots and lots of graininess which sucks, as I know HD on my monitor looks pretty good as it outputs from my xbox pretty nice and 1080p movies in games look pretty damn good.

I looked around for tweak guides but my google fu is weak....so...help me make my blu rays look pretty?

What movies have you been playing? DVDs are pretty much hopeless at 1080p since it doesn't have the necessary resolution on your monitor. Also, some blu ray movies have a bad film to disc transfer that's causing the poor quality. Try using a Pixar movie or a similar animated film to test out movie quality since those are 100% digital transfers.

Disable all of the artificial screen settings in the CCC for video like edge enhancement. Only way to get the most natural picture.

Right now using the free bundled power dvd 8, because hey it was free and full featured 5.1 surround etc.

I've tested with blu ray copies of I Am Legend, Iron Man 2 and Ninja Assassin.

So the ati control panel stuff should be a no go? What about de-interlacing options? I've fiddled with them all and honestly I can't tell the difference, though that just could be me.

Uncheck everything but 'Use application settings' under Basic Video Color and the only two checkboxes under Basic Video Quality.

Did that still getting graininess in my images, maybe I'm expecting too much? I just want the HD video to look the same on my computer as I see it on HDTV. *shrug*

Thanks for all the info....are there better programs out there to watch blu ray with?

Your HDTV is likely running some kind of hardware noise reduction while you watch movies, most of them have that feature turned on by default these days.

What I'm guessing you're seeing is the actual blu-ray film quality, and a close monitor exaggerates any grainyness of the source material. Some movies either have film grain (remasters of older movies usually) or they have artificial grain added during post-process if they're filmed digitally, as video that's "too clean" tends to look a bit artificial/clinical.

There's numerous ways to run denoise and postprocess filters on video, though I've never tried it on an actual bluray since I don't have a BD-Rom drive

Paragon, sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Can you go into you powerdvd settings please and please can you list the settings and what they are set to?

Also, in the AMD catalyst control panel, when you go to the video section is, can you check if you have "use applictaion settings" ticked or unticked?
