Blown driver?

I have a set of Infinity SS-2001 speakers, and I'm not sure if one of the drivers is blown or not... all of a sudden it started bottoming out, but the cone and foam are in perfect shape and it moves freely up and down. I swapped it with the driver and the other speaker, and the problem seems to follow the driver.

If it's blown, is there any way I can fix it? I'm not sure I'll be able to find a suitable replacement, and I love these speakers :(
 
Actually upon further inspection, there is a linear tear in the foam right next to the cone, and is so hairline I didn't notice it. I guess I'll have to re-foam it then, or is there any way to fix this since it's so small?

YOu could use a thin beat of silicone on the backside. I've done that before and works great. Make sure yo uget clear stuff and thin applications..

This one looks ok, just make sure it dry s soft, see if you can do a test first, spread some on a piece of paper or something then try to flex it in a day or so, you need it to stay soft not cure hard.

If it cures hard, it will make the driver pull to one side and cause the VoiceCoil to rub..

Remember it goes on the back of the driver in the surround, not on the front.

Shoot, I went ahead and put it on both sides before I saw your post. I found some "flowable silicone sealant" at the house and ended up using that.

Hopefully they sound good after it cures, otherwise I'll probably spend the $20 on a refoaming kit for the pair.

it' won't hurt being on the front, i just suggested the rear so you don't see it :)

Well it was a success, after letting it cure overnight they sound as good as new. This is what it now looks like, it's hard to even tell it's there unless you look at it closely.



Thanks for the info :) I'll probably end up re-foaming them in the future, but this is perfect for the time being.

Well I have some bad news.. while blasting music today the complete rest of the foam decided to split apart. Except for the part that I glued of course :p

Is there any point to gluing it back? Or would I be better off re-foaming them at this point? The break is still hairline and easy to glue.
 
Your going to have to re-foam them. Eventually the foam will all deteriorate and just fall apart. If you love the speakers 20-30 dollars to fix is not that bad.

I think it's worth it, the other speaker is fine for now but I'm sure it will be going sometime soon just like this one. I ordered a kit for both speakers for $20 shipped, I'll keep you guys updated with my progress.

Also, I decided to glue the whole thing just for the hell of it, I wonder how it will sound :p
 
Well I finally got the materials and re-foamed them, they sound as good as new and I don't have to worry about any more splits. :p

I'm pretty happy with how they came out, not 100% but much better than I expected for my first time doing this type of thing.

Good job, now you know how to do it and realize that just because the surround is dead / broken, you can just re-pair :)
