Blotchy black screen on 2001FP

Putting a new 2001FP through its paces, I have noticed a blotchy artifact when I have a black screen or screen saver. I would describe the blotchyness similar to viewing the Milky Way on a dark clear night. The pattern of blotchyness remains the same regardless if I an=m running in a digital or analog mode. Is this to be expected or worth returning for another. DOB November 2003 running WinXP.
Thanks again.

If I'm understanding correctly,

it's most likely the backlight leakage. A good amount of the 2001fps have this issue. I've replaced mine 7 times because of serious backlight leakage issues, but I still don't have one w/o that problem. (although it is much better than the others I replaced) :(

:)

You've replaced 7! How difficult is it to have a 2001 replaced by Dell for backlight leakage problem?

the 6th one i decided to keep, since the backlight leakage is minimal and there aren't any dead pixels.

It's weird though, some days it's better - yet the other days it's not.

And everytime I clean the screen gently, it seems to slightly move position. It seems the protective panel on top of the lcd and the enclosure is causing this problem.

It wasn't too difficult to have it replaced.. but in most cases, you'll be on hold for a good 20-30 mins. Then trying to communicate with the Indian tech support reps are a pain in the (_!_).

As long as you can deal with that, it'll be fine. But in my instance, I had to do that 6 times. It takes approximately an hour to get one issue resolved.

Cant they just be emailed, or go through some support line for small business, which I would assume has actual English speaker? Cause I think I have one of your returns Enyceexdanny. :p

yeah, the casing has a definite relation. My backlighting in the upper right coner---If I press the corner in it exagerates it. Maybe I should just return it for credit and spend 1600 on the NEC. Hah...not gonna happen.

yes, you can email them. but I realized the overall wait time is longer that way.

I ask a question, they get back to me within 6 hours with a question - I reply, then they email me again in 6 hours... etc etc..

lol, it'll be funny if you really did receive my return....., umm no, not really.. it'll be sad.... :(

don't press it too much though.. because it gets worse as you touch it. That's why this current one wasn't touched at all. I warned everyone not to ever touch it. :D

I don't even pivot due to this issue. Because in order to pivot, I'll need to grab the bezel, and thus putting pressure on the enclosure.

Believe me, I'm not depressing anything. I only did it once or twice to notice the effect.

I guess we are being penalized for being early adopters, because the more I think about it, 800 bucks isn't really cheap! I have an extra large gas bill to prove it.

So the return process, do they send you another one, then you return the other one with their shipping label?

Oh yeah, the thing that made me decide it's worth trying to exchange is when I could notice it in the UT2004 demo. Granted, only when it is between games, but you know what I mean.

I guess I'm a perfectionist too. I retract all the hassles I gave you Excee. :D

It shouldn't get worse unless you press it. The defect isn't a degernative one, its just bad manufacturing.

Well, they send you a new one first (usually overnight shipping). I've heard that they send it along with a shipping label, but for the 6 out of the 7 times I replaced it - they didn't include it.

Once you get the new one, compare it with the one you currently have - then when you decide which one to return, call Dell customer service and have them arrange a pick-up for the defect.

One good thing is that all the shipping expenses are paid by Dell. Imagine how much money I would've wasted on shipping if it wasn't so. :D

There was no hassle, so don't worry about it. ;) Noone will know why I was feeling that way and stating such things until they get one with such issues. The ones I've replaced were so messed up, it wasn't even funny.

By the way, I've also noticed that as the monitor stays on longer and heats up - the worse the leakage gets. Weird.. :(

Thanks for the helpful input.. Just called tech support and they will be sending me a new one. Be careful with these folks. They asked me to shake it "like a polaroid picture" or an Etch-A-Sketch to resolve the backlighting issue. And whether I degaussed it!!
I hope the new one arrives in better condition. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Thanks again.

I am also returning my monitor, (backlight, what else?), and I have a question. When the new monitor arrives and it passes my quality control inspection, is it alright to just return the old panel and stand in the box from the new one?
This would save me the trouble of repackaging the power brick, cables, software, etc.. It would also keep me from forgetting something and winding up in a snafu with Dell. My guess is they would never know the diff, and if they did they don't really care. Probably a dumb question, but I want to be sure. Thanks.

P.S. Enyceex should be an authority on this. lol. Who, by the way, may be helping to ensure a quality, defect free product for [H]'ers present and future. Critics be damned enyceex. It's this simple: Dell makes the defective product. Dell makes the Satisfaction Policy. Who is anyone here to judge my threshold of satisfaction? The voice of the masses is action. And we have spoken.

You should send it back in the original box it came in, just incase.

If you look at the underside of the box, there's the serial number for the monitor printed on a label. Just move all the contents from the new box to the old. :D

I was told to use the new box:

"If the part is to be returned, you will receive a prepaid return airbill. Please use the box that your good replacement
parts(s) came
in to return the defective part(s) within 7 business days. "

And yes, they really did put an (s) after the s :)

Also, they said you can throw either the new or old one in the box and send it back, they don't care. Exchanging via e-mail was painless. All it took was one email and they asked to verify my address. Had it shipped out the same day.

It says that, but I still tried to be safe and send it back on the old box. Since they claim that "you will receive a prepaid return airbill", but I never received that either.

Oh well. :D

Well I just emailed them after posting in this thread. I got an email quickly with the replacement information, and then it arrived few days later.

The unit is much better. The backlighting seems uniform. Like if you look at that background that comes with windows of the solar eclipse...I can't see any difference in the black, so thumbs up on that. No apparent pixel problems either.

And as enyceexdanny mentioned, no return sticker to ship it back, but I emailed them on that. The only thing I had to take out of the new one is the panel, so no way am I going through putting it in the original box!

So I guess my luck was fairly good.

The nagging thing is gone. As they say in that excellent Nextel IT support phone ad, "problem solved". :D

I wonder if half their problem with the units is caused by having the face of the display a scant few inches from one side of the box. You'd think they would have it in the center of the box nestled safely between the syrofoam.
