I want to block some time wasting websites from my computer. First i looked into using the HOST file to reroute ipadresses but you can still access other links to the site, so it doesn't block the whole site.

My D-link can block the complete site the only thing is that it gets noticed by the users. information like "This website is not on the allowed list of your router" will end up me having to deal with people whining for access. How can i hide that information ?
Is it possible to link that site to 404 page not found and remain anonymous?

If there is a more effective and cost free way to deal with this, please let me now.

You want to block sites but don't want them to come whine to you.

This tells me that:
-Not your network
-You are not in charge

Wouldn't they whine anyways because "Hey look, it works at home but not here, hmmmm WEIRD"?

He seems to have the router password. That means it is his network and he is in charge, at least for the moment.

There are host file management tools that make using a larger hosts file on a small scale user group tolerable.

HostsXpert is one of them. As you said, the only problem with a hosts file is that you cannot use wildcards, and so no *.google.com. You have to put in mail.google.com, google.com, reader.google.com, etc.

It would be helpful if you posted how many users you have, and how many sites you want to block, and how often those sites change. That has a big effect on what kind of solution is best for you.
