Blinking white "--" top left :( help

I tryed to install XP on my old computer but after it says to restart the computer then i take out the CD so that it doesnt wnt to install again after it reboots. usually when i install XP i just put the CD in when i see the XP screen loading but this time that didnt happen only a little white _ was blinking in the top left, can someone help me out here?

Put the XP Cd back in, boot to recovery console, and type fixmbr.

it says "C:\WINDOWS" then i type "fixmbr" and press enter and nothing happens.

It should pop up a message saying, something about unrecognized boot sector, are you sure you want to do this...

That's what I would have recommended. Lords knows I have done this several times over the last few days
