Blank Disk hangs Explorer.exe

When I insert a blank CD-R into my SATA LG DVD+/-RW, any application which tries to reference the disk hangs and become unusable. After removing the blank disk and closing the drive the system is able to recover after a while. It use to work before in vista, but since I reformatted and re-installed I am unable to read or write Blank CD's. I've tried different brands, checked for firmware updates, have the latest drivers according to Microsoft, but it still will only read normal CD's/DVD's.

Any suggestions? Could it be a bad installation of Vista?
