Lost a 3.2ghz P4 at work today. The guy's pc locked up on him a couple times and he instantly blamed the "cancer" thing. This was the second time that this has happened and I almost removed it last time too. So instead of getting hassled and making a scene, I just took it off. Its too bad too, he was letting me run big work units on it. Some people just don't understand. I mean, why would it start freezing his pc now? How did he know that all the other 67 processes on his machine weren't the cause? He didn't, but he knew that the "cancer" thing was the problem. Oh well, some people aren't cut out to help cure diseases.

 
Unfortunately, I have seen similar problems where I work, and have had to tone down the WU size and / or uninstall :(
 
i only do big work units for my comps. Sometimes they do make for some trouble and I rather not here about it from others

 
yeah...it couldnt have been the other 67 processes that are running which is only 20 more processes that im running and i have WAY to much shit open right now...but NOOO it couldnt be that...i bet if you ran a spyware scan you would get a crap load of hits...but its the program saving lives, not the ones stealing his and the company's private info...no that cant be it.

Did you just remove F@H, or did you do a full clean? If he's whining about F@H, take it off and watch him continue to complain, then put F@H back on and remove all the spyware he's contracted from visiting sites he shouldn't be visiting on work time anyway! :D

Yeah no kidding, I've got 58 running right now on my work machine, but thats with 14 windows open! When I sat down to his computer i opened the task manager and he had 67, with ZERO windows open. I was dumbfounded.
 
yeah...67 processes is just plain crap...if you have 67 running, you should be doing some HEAVY HEAVY work period. i dont even think WIn2003 server starts with more than like 40 and thats a server.

my laptop has 51 proccesses open... like 10 windows and the server at work has over 80

Sorry to hear that...every work unit counts. Hopefully I'll be getting my Athlon 1200 back online tonight or later this week. My 5th shelf just arrived from Gruber, so I just have to rearrange all the shelves...though I might wait for the power switch to install before I rearrange.

What's he going to say when it crashes now and fah isn't running? I hope you brought that up with him, pointing out that no matter what a dumb ass like him thinks fah isn't (most likely) causing his problem, and when that's proven to him he'll let you put it back on. It's a self fulfilling phrophecy now though, no matter how many times a day it crashes he'll insist it's running better because fah isn't on there. Now..... just make sure fah isn't the problem before you put it back on. ;) How much memory is in the machine?

Oh hell yeah I mentioned it! Last time he deleted a critical file in a program that was needed for startup and his pc hung for like 8 minutes when he attempted to log in. I REALLY wanted to recreate the problem this time to see it for myself and see what was going on in the task manager again but he said that he didn't have time cause it "takes a couple minutes" before it happens. I told him after i removed it from the registry and deleted the folder, "welp, looks like the next time your pc shits itself you won't have anything to blame except the operator." This PC is a dell sx280, its one of their gay ultra small form factor pc's that sit behind a 1704 LCD panel. I'm using one at work too and I definitely have concerns about it not being able to cool itself well. But I mean if dell didn't build a pc that can handle the presHott running at 100% all the time, there are going to be major problems down the road. Lastly, pageian, it has a single 1 gig stick in it, all of them do because there's only 2 slots. So its slightly crippled there for bandwidth but still. His 67 processes were taking up about 530 megs of ram at the time I think. /rant



edit: Anyone have any idea of how to monitor the temps for a dell machine? I'd really like to know what its running at. I posted a question in the full system forums a week or so ago and got lots of replies, zero if i remember right... :rolleyes:

step 1...grab a 4x4
step 2...sneak up and SMACK HIM ON THE BACK ON THE HEAD
step 3...fix problem and reinstall F@H

See...3 full steps and problem solved :)

i think monitering temps is a mobo/bios thing...you can always try something like Speedfan but if the bios isnt reporting a temp, i dont think you can...but i could be wrong.

There are going to be major problems down the road. A Large Govt Agency I happen to know almost nothing about has had to replace a lot of their Optiplex miniboxen. Guess which LGA isn't buying miniboxen anymore?

2x4's are better, much easier to handle...not that i know from experience...:)

One thing I've noticed about most of your OEM PC's, Dell, Compaq/Hp, etc. is that they skimp on the onboard temp sensors. It's worth a try for sure though.

We've got a bunch of the old SFF Dells around work as well, and even with older Northwoods in them, they absolutely cook.

Are you sure it's not a GX280? It sounds very similar to my POS here at work. P4 2.8 Preshott, 2x256 DDR-II RAM, runs hot and the damn fan is annoying especially with it spinning up and down all the time.

I wish something like Speedfan worked on the system. I've tried it with no luck. I was hoping I would be able to control the fan speeds and set it to one high speed that tried to keep the CPU cool while not having to listen to it spin up and down all the time. The temp monitoring would have just been a bonus. However, it's a no go on mine. As mentioned previously, I don't think the board has any temp monitoring hardware at all.

That's what *I* said, but noooooo, "security" or some such. I think they're probably destroying the disks, and possibly the whole machines. On the other hand, the other possibility is they're selling them as gov't surplus. The gripping hand is that they might be sitting in a big pile out back, with the support techs pouring gasoline carefully so as to get all of them. I think they'd prefer the last ;)

Just as a note, I'm not directly associated with the LGA mentioned before... yet.

Nope they are definitely SX280's. But ours are 3.2's with 1 gig stick. They're probly about the same thing though.
