BlackiceX or BIP2

I was wondering if I would get better performance with a blackice pro 2 and 2 120mm fans, or a black ice xtreme and one 120mm fan(will be cooling 2x 7800gtx and 4000+ sandy)
 
If those are the options, I would say most likely the BIP and 2 fans. BIX has a higher cooling ceiling, but you need a lot of airflow to reach it.
 
do you think a BIP 2 would be enough to cool the 2 video cards and a cpu?

It should do pretty well depending on what CPU and video cards and how much you OC them.

Yes, that should be fine, provided that you have a decent pump, like the others said.
 
I currently have a Hydor L35, but I am planning on getting a Danger Den CSP-MAG 12 Volt Pump or a Danger Den DDC-12V because the hydor is very loud and I am trying to build a very quiet pc, does anyone know which of those would perform better and which would be quieter?(of the 2 I am looking to buy I mean)

Well, I can't say for sure because I haven't heard the CSP-MAG pump you are referring to, but the DDC is VERY quiet. I can barely hear it. Definitely quieter than an L35.

Why? Even if it has the same surface area on the fins as the BIX, you can have twice as much air moving across it, because of the fact that you have two fans instead of just one.
 
Lots of people have used that pump, earlier versions had some problems, but the latest release seems to be doing rether well and people have been happy with them. Pretty good bang for your buck I''d say. It should work fairly well for a moderate flow system........... :D
 
I also read in the reviews lots of people saying they had to hit the ddc to get it to start up... is that still a problem or di d they get that fixed?
 
When I spoke to the DangerDen guys at PDXLAN5 I was told that for a system with a high end processor and 2 video cards, you will need two of the DD MAG pumps to get enough flow in the system as they only have 2.3 meters of head each.. As far as the DDC pump, the current batch of them have the updated electronics so the tapping issue is non-existant. Be sure to order the DDC pump directly from DangerDen as some retailers may still have the older version in stock. Personally, if I was you I would go with the D5 pump as it is almost just as silent as the DDC, but has more head. Its really all down to what size tubing you plan to be using.
 
I'm using 1/2" ID tubing, with a tdx block and I dont know if i want to go with 2 maze4s or 2 of the new nv78(will probably go with the maze4 if for no other reason then I dont want all the extra weight of the nv78s) and will the d5 be considerably quieter then the hydor 35?


and does anyone by chance know the size screws you use for the BIP2(for mounting the fans or the radiator)
 
The D5 is quieter than the Hydor, at least quieter than the 25II anyway.
The BI radiators use self taping sheetmetal screws, #6 if I remember right, but you can tap the hole to what you want if you have the tools. I tapped mine to standard 6-32 threads.
 
Keep in mind that if one of your goals is 'near silence' for your system you will end up needing to use lower CFM fans. The BIX is made for performance but requires some pretty hefty fans like the San Ace familly or the Panaflo High Performance which are by no means quiet fans. The BIP familly is made for more moderate fans in terms of airflow and the noise that comes with it.

The DDC, D5, or AquaXtreme 50z would all be pretty good pumps for what you wish to do. The D5 *might* be the best choice if you are unsure of what balance of performance vs silence you want. That pump has controls which allow you to turn up or down the voltage the pump uses which allows you to control performance vs noise. Lastly I would also look into some form of fanbus to allow you to control the noise the fans make as well.

As a sidenote I am currently using the AquaXtreme 50z (aka MCP600) pump in my system along with some San Ace fans. I am running 7volts through my fans currently (at 12v those puppies were simply loud) I still cannot hear my pump. Its the fans that are the noisy component of my system. I used to use a Hydor L35 and from the ones I have heard both the D5 and the AquaXtreme 50z were more quiet than the Hydor.
 
pa 160 is what you need....if not the pro2 dont go with the xtreme thats to little cfm for that rad.....
 
are there any other good alternatives to the bip2? it needs to be a dual 120mm rad and have 1/2" id barbs, and the main thing is it needs to be fairly thin (bix is to thick) also do those pumps generate alot of heat?
 
thats what I was thinking too.. only thing is I would rather not have the barbs on the end like they are but th eonly one i know of that has them on the sides is that dual swiftech radiator, and I dont want that one.

Yep, same pump.

This is a pretty nice write-up by Cathar (one of the better information resources in watercooling - he designed the Storm block you have been posting about as well as other well known ones) on many of the pumps used in watercooling. This guide unfortunately is pre- MCP655/D5 and the DDC but gives a pretty good explanation of whats out there pump wise. For comparision purposes the D5 is somewhat close to the older/noisier D4 pump (although better) when the D5 is being run full blast. I am unsure as to the amount of heat dumped into the loop by the D5 however.

The reason I ended up with the MCP600/AquaXtreme 50z at that time was due to its low amount of heat added to the loop and the ability to crank it up to 1.38 volts for some really nice performance.

The first two posts by Cathar in that linked thread are pretty interesting. If you prefer the short form skip down to near the bottom of each post and look for his conclusion section. If I had it to do over again now however I would probably go for the D5 since it can easily be undervolted by using the pump controls.

It performs better with it in. One of the keys for the water passing through the block to absorb heat is turbulence. That nozzle focuses the stream of water into a higher speed impact with the inner surface of the water block which creates more turbulence. This in turn allows the water to carry more heat away from the waterblock.

Short form- its better with the nozzle in ;)
 
Yep, you can hook it up to a 'fan controller' or basically an 18w(or better) rheobus.

This one is currently 'on sale' and is rated up to 20w per channel.

could you control it with something like a Matrix Orbital Intelligent LCD Display ?
 
I am unsure as to what rating the channels for the Matrix has. To control that pump its suggested that the rheostat/controller be able to handle 18w or more per channel.

I looked on several review and spec sites but havent been able to determine the wattage rating per channel of the Matrix. It might require a email to the manufacturer.
 
The Sunbeam Tech Rheobus doesn't really like the D4 all that well, it really puts a strain on it, it's to close to the max I guess. I haven't tried the D5 on it yet though, but I may get around to it one day, but the D5 is quiet enough for me the way it is even srt on #5.

I did take a current reading with the D5/MCP-655 in operation at the #5 setting on my systen and came up with 1.6 amps and I don't think the Sunbeam Tech Rheobuss will push that much without overheating.

Thats what I get for not checking the numbers first ;)

According to Swiftechs stats that pump can draw up to 2 amps and operate at up to 14 volts so you actually need to find at least a 30watt rheobus and that still only barely surpasses the total possible wattage needed.

Yep, I can see how a 20watt Sunbeam may not quite fit the bill.

that nozzle comes out b/c you can buy 5 extra nozzles, of which #4 gives the best performance. They are labled #1-5 in order of decreasing opening (giving more of that turbulence effect you were talking about), but #5 has small holes that might get clogged, and they restrict flow a little too much to see a benifit over the #4 nozzle. a TDX with a #4 nozzle will see a pretty big gain over the stock nozzle.

O yea, and on the original question, a BIP2 for SURE. It's much cheaper than an Xtreme (@ DD at least) and cools about the same and you can use lower flow fans effectively (not possible on the thick BIX2 or double heatercore).
 
probably. It will give you VERY low resistance, and so if you have a low flow design it'll probably be ok, but you will definitely get better performance w/ it in in a moderate or high flow design
