I've heard consistent bad things about BlackICE. Aside from a few people who have used it and then switched to zone alarm, Steve Gibson from www.grc.com (He's a security GOD) stress tested it once and was very unhappy with it. Granted that was a while ago, but ya know.
I'd also recommend zone alarm. I've never had problems with it, other than vsmon (some key component of ZA) running in the background without the frontend and blocking everything until I killed it. Then again, you shouldn't really run into that problem, since you should never turn it off.
