Black Screen

I built a new computer for xmas and now I think I'm over heating. When I play guild wars for a half hour or so, the screen goes black and some weird slow techno-like loop plays on my speakers. None, of the fans turn off, but i cant do ctrl + alt + delete or windowssign + m.\
I don't have anything over clocked and my RAM is set to 2-3-3-6 (its corsair XMS)

have you installed any kind of fan/temp monitoring software to see what it's doing at least in windows? The bios will give you some good info too, if you reboot quick enough and get in there before things cool down again.

best place to start would probably be a simple visual inspection of all the fans to make sure they're all working. you could also re seat the Heatsink and fan on your processor to make sure it's really on there and making good contact.

Now, I was playing HL 2 and it just decided to close down after a while. Good idea about the bios thing. I made sure they were all running . They are all on High (antec P180). I'll reseat the heatsink.

Anyone know of any programs to display computer temps on your screen. With an option to make them ontop of everything?

I actually just had the same exact problem with my 9800pro, except it would happen like a couple minutes into the game. I would run a game and would get a black screen, or sometimes just a ton of artifacts. I thought it was a driver issue though, cause I got a BSOD one time because of an ati driver thing. Only got one BSOD, the rest were just black screens with that weird noise.

anyway, the fan got too much dust in it or something, so now it barely moves, and requires a lot of force to spin it. So I just took the HS off and put some AS5 on, and then connected an 80mm fan I had to the video card heatsink, and no more problems.

I would check the fan on your video card. Or if it happens again, turn it off, open up the comp and feel how hot the heatsink is. If it's too hot to keep your hand on it, that might be the problem.

I have an XFX (can be OC'd but its not) 7800 GT. The graphics card fan moves, I can see it. But it doesn't seem to move much air...at all.

Could I put some arctic silver on the Graphics card (Is it possible?) and would it void the warranty.

did you check to see how hot the heatsink was? if it's too hot to touch that might be your problem. If it is you can try putting a case fan up against the heatsink, or even position a household fan blowing air onto the graphics card and see if that helps.

Or maybe the TIM was not applied very well, so there is not good transfer of heat between the GPU core and the heatsink. You can put arctic silve on the graphics card if you take the heatsink off, and that usually voids the warranty, but I don't know how easy it is to check if the warranty is voided...

Could this have anythign to do with it?

(the 2.5V rail being at 1.2)

Also, are my temps ok?
My HDD seems kinda hot.

Please note: these temps were right after a crash.

These are the temps right after I start up the computer...

The HD is much cooler. And I did some wire managment last night, so actually, now the GFX card is pointing right towards it :/

What kind of power supply do you have?

Maybe it's just me but that hard drive is running kind of hot. I don't think it'd be the source of your problem though but I could be wrong.

Did you try ChingChang's suggestion?

That black screen thing Is fixed, but I am still curious about my PSU

I don't really know lol. I updated the BIOS and that got rid of the BSOD. Then I rearranged my case, which stopped the black screens. Now, I'm using ATI tool to keep an eye on my temps. I'm idleing at about 43 and when I do the search for artifacts, It goes up to about 70. Is that too high?

That PSU is good...fortron makes good products. I just wish that I could find them at an affordable rate whenever I go PSU hunting. I've only found one place that reliably has them in stock, and they're on the other side of the country *grumble*

Haha, I know fortron makes good products...but that voltage thing...could I have hooked something up wrong?

That fsp group PSU is really nice, I have one myself except I got it at Ewiz for $20 cheaper. That wasn't a sale price either. Here is the link for anyone interested. I had no problems with ewiz at all, great retailer, I ordered that PSU and a 3200+ Venice from them.

hmm..So while I was playing guild wars the black screen thing happend again...

Maybe somethign was unconnected? I brought my computer over my cousins two nights ago so It was moved around kinda alot.

So it only happens after playing the game for a while?

For monitoring temps, you can try something called Motherboard Monitor 5. Just google MBM5.exe and you should find it.

70C is kinda high for gaming. I know if my rig gets much above 60C there's a pretty good risk that BF2 will simply shut itself off after detecting an error. All it took was an extra 80mm fan to prevent that though.

Try seeing if there's an update for your video drivers.

Another good way to see if it's temperaature or what is to run prime95 for about 24 hours and see if it detects any errors. It'll push your CPU as hard as it can go. If it really is temps, then your comp will likely restart itself. Just make sure you've got the safety temperatures set at a decent number. Personally, mine's set at 70C since mobos don't always report accurate temps and 80C is more than I'd ever want any of my processors to hit.

If that doesn't result in any errors, try memtest86 for a few hours. That'll do a thorough check of your RAM.

If none of the above displays a problem, try 3DMark05. If it starts glitching during that you'll have narrowed it down to Video card, Mobo, or PSU.

From there, swapping to an equivelant, yet known to be good, PSU will help determine if that's the problem.

Hope this helps.

Meh, it kinda stopped.

Right after it happend though, I started the computer up and ran guild wars. The textures were all messed up and there were a few artifacts. Oh, yeah...I took a screen...

And now everything is good...i got about 54 degrees while playing guild wars and about the same with BF2.

edit...now I'm going to get like 30 million people whispering me from posting that lol...

Meh...just tell me your from [h] if you do
