Black Screen with Intel Graphics Driver

Hey guys,
Built a machine with Windows 8.1 Pro and an Intel 4670 processor. I'm just using the Intel 4600 Graphics chip right now - no other video card installed.

For some reason when Windows updates the Intel HD Graphics driver, when the changes are applied, I just get a black screen. It looks like the monitor flickers back between just a black screen, and reporting no signal. This is after Windows starts up - I can navigate the BIOS and see the Gigabyte splash fine.

If I downgrade to the Generic Microsoft Display driver, everything is superb - no issues. If I download the latest driver from Intel's website and use that, same issue. As soon as the driver is installed, screen goes black...

Anyone have any idea?

Thanks!

I suppose more information of the computer build would help (like RAM size, etc) troubleshoot this problem.

Its possible its applying a resolution not supported by your display

More like a refresh rate.
Once the Intel drivers are installed and getting a black screen, have you tried booting into safe mode?

Yeah - that's what lead me to believe it's a driver issue.
Everything looks fine in safe mode even with the graphics driver installed, no issues.

When I roll back the graphics driver to the generic Microsoft Basic Display Adapter everything is fine in non-safe mode.

Just now read that, dont let Windows update the driver. It may be an old one that isnt compatible with Windows 8.1. Download the latest here.

Tried the latest driver from Gigabyte, still no dice...conks out when driver is loaded. Still fine with Generic Microsoft Display driver.

2 errors in Event Viewer (not sure if related):

There was someone who had a similar issue. It wasn't really resolved (here), seems like the motherboard does its own thing regardless of its user. Did you increase the iGPU size in the BIOS? In another Gigabyte mobo (GA-Z77X-UP7), you could specify size of iGPU or no iGPU (discrete GPU).

I can actually get into the machine remotely using logmein when the monitor craps out.
For some reason it just stops detecting a monitor on the DVI port when the graphics driver is loaded.

Tried a new DVI cable and it worked (?).

So apparently my graphics card driver doesn't like my DVI cable...

Kind of confused, but I guess I'll go with that. Current cable is too short, so ordering a new one off Amazon.
