Black screen while booting up: motherboard problem?

I have an LCD moniter that should automatically recognize the signal from my computer when it's booting up. However, for some reason, my moniter remains black even when I turn my computer on (this is my laptop I'm working on right now, my desktop is the one with the problem).

I suspect its a motherboard issue because I hear the regular sounds of startup coming from the box for about 5 seconds after I turn the power on, then the activity stops. The fans still run and everything, but there's not the signiture whirring of the harddrive and such. I tried connecting my LCD to another comp and it works fine, and I tried replacing the harddrive but that doesn't do anything. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

System specs:
Win XP Home SP1
Asus P4G8X Motherboard
P4 2.53Ghz
2 gigs Mushkin PC2100 RAM
Nvidia GeForce4 Ti4600
 
You left some important things out. Is this a new computer that you are puting together for the first time, or is this a computer that you have had, and all of a sudden started having problems?

If its a new computer that you are putting together then I would lean toward your ram, either being bad or having issues with your mb. I suggest you try using only one stick first see if that works if does not then try a diffrent stick made by a diffrent company. If you do get it up and running you might just have to do a bios flash to get it to work with your ram.
 
This is a computer that I've had for about a year now and it just started doing this last night. I flashed the BIOS on my motherboard to the newest version a while ago, so that might not be an issue.
 
Are you able to try the lcd in a differant pc? Or a differant video card in your current pc?
 
I tried the LCD on a different PC and it worked fine, but I haven't been able to test the video card on another PC (I'm at college, and a liberal arts one at that, so people either have laptops/don't know anything about computers)
 
Sounds like the video card is hosed. a local store might have a used pci card for cheap cheap.
 
Indeed, the graphics card being dead could be a possiblity. But the thing is, when I start it up and leave the computer on for a long time (even when the screen doesn't show up) I don't hear the traditional sounds of startup coming from the case. Usually the CPU clicks and the harddrive goes faster and such, but now the fans and harddrive spin just fine but there are none of the other sounds that I usually hear during the bootup process. That's what led me to believe that there was a motherboard problem.

Also, since I'm at college (a blessing and a curse, in some ways) the only accessible electronics store is a best buy, and out of all their equipment they only have 2 mobo's to choose from and only the newest video cards (and I'm not too thrilled about buying a Radeon 9800 just to see if my video card is fried)

i havent been to bestbuy in awhile but im pretty sure they carry cheap vid cards. I know those geforce2mxs still sell like hotcakes .
