x-post of my ati support ticket since they are closed on weekends.
I just got this video card back from RMA, booted up fine and installed the 5.3 drivers, rebooted to finish the installation, but instead of booting into windows, i got a black screen for about 15-20 seconds and then my computer rebooted. This time it brought me to a screen that said windows had encountered an error and asked if I wanted to bootup into safe mode, last known good configuration, or start windows normally. I chose safe mode. After booting into safe mode an error dialogue pops up that says "Computer restarted after an unexpected shutdown. Microsoft Windows detected a possible device failure. The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation. Please check with the device anufacturer for a driver update. Please tell Microsoft about this proble. The display driver for RADEON 9800XT seems to be responsible for the system instability." I reinstalled the 3.7 drivers from my CD while in safe mode, and booted up windows normally no problem. Re-downloaded and installed 5.3 and I get the same problem. I have a chaintech znf-150 motherboard with the latest nforce drivers, 5.10. I tried the nforce drivers that came on the motherboard cd too, those didn't work. I had a PCI geforce 5200 video card in before I put my radeon 9800xt back in and I forgot to uninstall the geforce drivers. After thinking that might have caused it, I put the PCI card back in with the monitor connected to it and uninstalled those drivers and reinstalled the 5.3 catalyst drivers for the radeon, didn't fix anything.
