I have a crazy idea for a case mod that involves an actual "black box" from a aircraft.

I have looked around but to no avail...I could have one built, but that kinda defeats my intentions for the build.

Any ideas?

ummm i would guess that a real one would be really really expensive......
 
Your right. I was hoping there would be like 3 on eBay, but no suck luck.

Im sure it would be cheaper to have a one made to "black box" specs...but that takes some of the charm out of it. :(

Oh well, I will set that concept on the back burner, for now. I have a friend that is involved in Hollywood special effects, maybe he might have a lead from a prop or something...

Contact the NTSB or TSA and tell them your looking for one for a project and you can promote them... just an idea. They might point you into the right direction.

Or you can go to an aircraft bone yard and get one yourself... thats if you know where to look.


Just so you know, these things are not the size of computer cases ;)
 
If you want to build to black box specs, you're in for a treat. All solid-state recording... titanium frame capable of withstanding 7,000 g's... the damned things aren't even black-- they're orange with two black racing stripes!

correction, that's two WHITE stripes. . no black anywhere except the handle, it makes the dam thing easier to spot. You know, in case it's encased in a giant pile of burning rubble that was once the plane.

Why do heavy duty electronics look so cool? That first ebay one (the tape one) is affordable and looks cool but I don't know if it would fit a computer.

That one uses a standard 3/4 inch video tape, you should be able to judge the size by that.

Also.....search for "avionics box" on ebay, you might come up with something that fits your needs.
 
you realize you want to modify (drill, tap, cut) something that by design is nearly indestructable right? good luck
 
A few here. You might also contact the Property Administration department at a company that makes cockpit flight data recorders and ask about buying a scrapped CVDR enclosure.

One of my former co-workers had a scrapped F-16 General Avionics Computer enclosure she used for a flower pot.
 
i install flight recorders in aircraft every weekend, and do testing and repair and such. first off they arent big enough for a computer to be inside... but... you could mod 2 together.

heres a better idea, make a custom one, maybe 2 times as big, and paint it up and make it look like one and just use it as a theme, not an actual enclosure.

I agree, that would be a hell of a lot easier than trying to finagle 2 together...
