Bizarre Audigy 2 Driver Issue (CMSS 2 and 5.1)

I have this problem with my Audigy 2 where in CMSS2 with 5.1 selected, I only get 4.1 sound if I have any of the EQ effects selected. I get 5.1 if I disable the effects. The issue is "resolved" when I reinstall the latest EAX 4 drivers, but soon the problem reappears. I also installed some "web update" for the soundcard, which wouldn't even install unless I first installed the EAX. I also get clipping when playing mp3s frequently. My soundcard is not on the same IRQ as my videocard, it's on IRQ 17.

What the hell is going on here?
 
When you say Audigy 2, do you mean the Audigy 2 ZS?

The A2 didn't have the EQ, just want to make sure before trying to troubleshoot.
