i was told to get better speeds with bittorrent at websites such as XXXXXX you must forward ports 6881-6999. is there any security risks by doing this?

Opening any port represents a potential security risk, and opening an unnecessarily large range as you quoted multiplies that risk.

Beyond that, you're on your own if you want to download warez.

it depends what BT Client your using.
Im using azureus and i only need to open one port up, for me its either port 7000, 8000, 9000, 10000, ive only got four ports open incase my ISP decides to port throttle the port i use, because they already throttle ports 6881 to 6999.

If you use something like ABC, then you would have to open up alot more ports, i dont like the idea of having 118 ports open.
I would suggest using Azureus and changing your port to something higher than 6999, Just in case there throttling ports 6881-6999.
GL :)

legitimate bittorrent downloads are typically linked from the developers site
and thus naming bittorrent search engines is something we take a dim view of

open secrets, but cherished delusions nevertheless ;)

I have open ports 6881 to 6999 on my router. Then I have Zone Alarm on and it catches everything else.

Cheers,
