I got myself a 2nd 7950. I currently have some weak 500watt PSU in my case, so I am powering the 2nd card through another power supply with a paperclip to turn it on. I installed the 2nd card and I can't seem to get it to work. I have reinstalled the drivers, but other than that I'm not entirely sure where to start. The card doesn't appear anywhere in Windows. I don't see any options in my BIOS for the PCI express slots. I've tried reseating it multiple times. I'm wondering if for some reason jump starting the PSU is the problem? the fan on the card spins up when the computer turns on... All cables are tight, card is snapped in. Really not sure why this isn't working...

When dealing with multiple cards I found that I had to do things in a very particular order.

Boot the computer like this, make sure all AMD drivers are gone, it should revert to the onboard stuff to get your monitor working. Then, turn computer off and plug in all 7950s. Boot the computer like this and THEN reinstall the AMD drivers.

I don't know why, but if I tried installing the drivers before plugging in the 7950s (my systems use 3, personally) it would always mess up and not detect them correctly in device manager.

this board doesnt have onboard video for some reason.
 
Has anyone tried using the regular PCI slots with riser cables? Just wondering since mobos are a lot cheaper than mobos with 7x 1x-16x slots

So.. I tried setting up my 3rd rig tonight with 2x 7950 and 1X 6970... for some reason when I had the 6970 plugged in, it was the only one that would mine. Any ideas? All 3 showed up as having 13.4 installed correctly and I could change their settings in afterburner... the 2x 7950s just wouldn't mine. :(

In GPUz, was OpenCL showing as checked for each of the GPUs?

If not, give this a spin and reinstall and see if OpenCL returns for all GPUs.

I meant the millivolts to your videocards. Are you overclocking? Start by increasing power limit to +20%, then you might not even have to change the voltage.

No I'm using stock clock and volt settings. Thinking that the single 1200W PSU may be the issue so going to put 3 of the cards onto a 2nd 1200W PSU and test it that way. I'll give an update in about an hour. right now I need to lay down and let my back relax. I hate having a jacked up back.

I can pretty much guarantee you it's the catalyst software & win7 having issues.
I've had all your headaches plus a few more and in the end, it's just the right version of win7 with the right updates and the right version of catalyst.
I have 7 computers mining with 20x 7950's and when I thought it was defective motherboards, it wasn't. It was just unjustified software issues.

There really shouldn't be a difference with compatibility, but I'm finally starting to understand why some people hate Radeon drivers.
 
I will also mirror what J Macker is saying...headaches abound setting up my systems. I found that just doing a clean install of Win 7 with no updates and using 12.8s resolved pretty much all my issues.
 
So I finally got the third rig going last night, albeit with only 2 cards. Once I put the third in, nothing was working right, so for the time being, I was just going to run 2 cards... I get it where everything works, it just boots up and goes...

Then I shut it down, and moved it 20 feet out onto the shelf to run headless like the other 2 rigs I have...

Start it up... it never starts mining. So I remote into it(chrome remote desktop, which I use on my other 2 rigs)... it shows just a black screen instead of desktop. I tried a dummy plug to fool it into thinking there is a monitor... nothing.

Anyone experienced anything like this?

If its purely for mining....reinstall windows, do zero updates (turn off automatic updates) and install 12.8 drivers. This is the most surefire method for getting a rig stable in my experience....or switch over to BAMT and see if your system is compatible with that.

I had the same issue caused by using the newest drivers recently. Like USMC said try downgrading your drivers. Hopefully you don't run into the problem i did where on downgrade your AMD OpenCL gets blown out and nothing will help you get it re installed. After a few hours of googling and manual removal attempts I finally found a list of registry keys and files to delete that took care of it. I would recommend a reload instead of f'ing with it if you have trouble getting your miners running after the driver install.

That seems to happen to me when I am running different AMD GPUs in the same box at the same time. I haven't had the issue as much with the 12.5 Beta 3's, but prior to that, it would take the Catalyst uninstall tool, reinstall the driver, one final restart and I'd be good to mine. Any further shutdowns or restarts would usually require me to wipe and reload the driver.

The other thing that I didn't mention is the one that I have mixed GPUs in... my plan was to have a 7970, 2x 7950s, and a 6970 in it... I'll try a couple of your suggestions, specifically the older drivers, and see what I get.

BAMT is also something that I'm going to look at, especially on my miners that are all 7950s.
 
Well.. I managed to get it running with 2 cards... the third makes it all out of whack.
 
Don't recall the link, but I've seen on the bitcointalk forums that Win8 seems to work better than Win7 with >3 cards. I'm happy with Ubuntu Linux 12.10/AMD13.3, but thinking of trying BAMT or another linux. Ubuntu's new network-manager and dns resolver is like Mac OSX - easy on the surface, inscrutable on the inside.
 
so I just got into trying to this and trying to determine if I am getting the most out of my machine.

I have two tabs in GPUMiner, one for each GPU I have. Is that the right way to do it? each is getting 135Mhash/sec

Is that good/bad/average? or do I suck at configuring this?

I've tried the openCL and the Cuda one using rpcminer-cuda.exe which this gets less than the openCL one.
 
that's actually pretty good for NVidia based cards... They're fairly pathetic for mining...

You'll be lucky to get 6 mhash out of a CPU. Not worth the power at all. You need one openCL tab for each GPU, but whether they use the same or share workers on the pool doesn't really matter. I personally use a different worker for each GPU though

Depending on your electricity cost, it's probably not worth it to mine with the GTX 480s.
I see the GTX480 pulling 250w here

To make a comparison, I mine LTC, but the hashrates are different, but profitability is higher than BTC mining. I use 7950's to mine. each card pulls roughly 200w and costs about $0.40 per day in electricity at $0.073 per kw/hr.

Each card can mine currently about 0.66 LTC per day, which is $2. So that's $1.60 profit.
But they hash at 500 Mh/s for BTC, and your cards are only getting 135. So divide that by 3. Now you've got a "profit" of $0.50 per day. That doesn't count electricity for A/C costs.

If your electric rates are double my rates, then you make nothing. So do the math first. Personally, I would not mine BTC with gtx480's right now. You're adding heat to your home and driving up your electric bill for nothing. If you want BTC and don't want to mine them, just buy them with dollars.

Each is separate. Your total hashing power is 270 Mh/s and you're using close to 500w to get that.

Like I said previously, I wouldn't use them to mine, especially in the summertime if you have to pay for air conditioning. If you want to mine, use Radeons.

How much are electric rates where you live?

If you're over $0.13 kw/hr, it is not profitable when BTC ~$100.

The computer being on all the time doesn't use nearly as much power at idle or near idle as it does under full gpu load. It definitely costs a good bit more to have it mining than just sitting there powered on.

Each tab shows the total for that worker only so you should be getting 270 total. To give you an idea of how bad nvidia cards are for this 1 5830 does 300mhash and uses only about 175 watts.

I got completely off of it with that last difficulty increase which ironically saw the BTC drop down a ton in value. I'm jumping around between worldcoin, feathercoin, litecoin, BBQcoin, memecoin right now just getting some of several lesser coins. LTC is sorta the "known" item but I'm putting some processing time into some under that just crossing my fingers as I collect thousands of the various other coins.

With the lesser ones I have better luck solo mining than pool mining. Usually what I do is mine on a pool for about 24 hours then mine solo for 24 hours and check the pool stats to see how many coins I found with them then average that with what I did solo and estimate that for the next 24 hours. What I'm finding is those various calculators for how many coins a day you should get are seriously off.
 
Im GPU mining LTC with BTC ASICs on order. Im hording the LTC in hopes that Gox actually comes through and posts LTC trading and then speculation drives prices through the roof.
 
I just got my Butterfly labs 7ghash miner. With my video cards I'm doing 8Ghash/s

not bad.
 
So I ordered early September, order was #7201

It should break even in slightly longer than 2 weeks.
