Bitcoin Discussion Thread Part 2

I've had to lower a lot of my ocs back to stock even using 11.4.

2 of my 5830s died and some of them are no longer stable at clocks that worked fine for weeks.

Even one of the cores on my water cooled 5970 stopped wanting to overclock.

FYI i OC'ed my 5770 to 992MHz with 1.274v (ridiculously high) and ran it stable for the last 2 weeks while i were surfing the web.Now my PC freezes even when i only switch between FF tabs, running @990 1.274v.

Any idea of what went wrong?

Things can get damaged even though they may work fine initially specially when pushed that hard. I'm also assuming you've taken the obvious steps of disabling hardware acceleration on youtube/flash videos and turned off hardware acceleration on firefox itself.

Yup, agree with that. Running your hardware over spec for short periods is one thing, running it over spec for hundreds and even thousands of hours is something else entirely. Especially with overvolting & excess leakage which occurs within the chip itself, I can see damage occurring gradually. You have to account for wear & tear on your hardware, just like you do running a business (or at least you should...).

Well,i bought this card just 2 weeks ago with 33 months of warranty, which means it's only been used for 3 months. The former owner didn't push it as hard as i do though. And i only run it like 6-10 hours a day,not 24/7 so the damage might not be occurred that early.

My guess would be what Yakk mentioned with overvolting and leakage. There's a good chance that the card just can't do it anymore.

If it doesn't work properly at stock clocks you can rma it. Unfortunately if it runs fine @ stock you wont be able to RMA it just because it's a sucky overclocker. My 5830s that died were only about a month old.

I have Google'd a bit, watched a couple vids, read a few articles... I still don't quite understand the whole idea. If you can use Bitcoins to actually purchase tangible goods, which according to a handful of sites you can, or if you can exchange them for standard currencies such as the dollar or euro, then technically they are money. If I set up a monster GPU to do some bitcoin mining, I start getting bitcoins. Why? Who is giving me the money, and how do they profit from it? No one gives crap away for free.

I just bought a open box Powercolor 6970 for less than that guy want's for his used 6950! Speaking of which, I got it cooled down to ~75 instead of close to 100C, but I seem to have a ceiling to my hashrate. If I go to 912, it does just over 400 Mhash/s, but if I go to the next step, it immediately drops to around 350. Using MSI afterburner with all of the monitoring turned off except GPU temp and fan speed. 1.149V. It does the same thing at higher voltages at exactly the same frequency. I don't have much experience OCing video cards.

Its the unique features of the bitcoin economy / infastructure that make the "coins" actually worth something to people. Its not really so much of a currency as it is a new commodity thats valuable. So, because of this alone, there are sites / stores / services that are willing to take bitcoins as form of valuable product for their product...kinda like bartering.

There are some popular exchanges that exist for bitcoin...where they are bought and sold for US$ and then can be transferred to another service that will change them into ... goods of various forms or cash them out. I personally mine in a pool that offers direct paypal cashouts.

Noone is giving you money, the work the computers compute is what generates new coins. Noone directly profits from this either(well except miners and hopeful investors) but no "higher up the chain" type profit. Its not really money like I stated above.
Its just a digital footprint / token that is simply worth something to others =)

On another note, its sucks, I just bought a 6950 DC2 ASUS 1GB ... successfully flashed the card with the known modified wizzard BIOS for specifically these cards and the BIOS flash was successful and I verified the new settings of the BIOS flash w/ RBE...but I didnt get unlocked shaders, even tried a reinstall of drivers...no dice =( must be laser cut....grrrrrrrr
Oh well, at 890mhz core 150mhz RAM it pulls 366mh/s...not too bad.

Powertune is throttling the card, increase it.

So, why are they worth something? Just because we geeky-type people like to have things to brag about, and now we can compare our Mega-hashes-per-second?

Props to you for your Razer AC-1 btw, I don't know many people who have those and I really like mine.

Try coming up with better questions other than feeble attempts to sound witty and you might get better answers.

What kind of hashrate can you get with overclocked 5770s?

Depends how hard you push the card. You should expect ~215-220Mhash/s at >950Mhz

Thanks, Lorien. I skipped CCC when I did my last driver install, and according to google searches there is no way to modify Powertune without CCC that is within my proficiency/risk tolerance. That's alright for now. I've backed the volts off and just run at that level for now and save some cooling costs. When fall gets here I'll crank it a little harder.

Ya, it's going to be very interesting using your mining rigs to totally substitute the need to turn on the furnace during the winter. The savings might be enough to offset the increased cooling related expenses of the summer months.

Yeah, when it's winter, I'm bringing my mining back upstairs to keep me warm. Save on my heating bills lol.

Of course lots of people will be thinking the same so I would suspect a difficulty rise when it gets cooler. I'll ramp up anyway and mine through the winter, then get my system in place to dump heat to the hot water pre-heat tank for next summer.

I got one too and love the sound it puts out!

Looks like Godaddy's DNS server is on the fritz. If you can't access simplecoin.us, switch to the main IP address at 74.117.57.70

This btc price and difficulty is depressing. I was going to get two additional rigs, but it doesn't seem worth it :/

I'm still expanding but only if I get hardware at a steal. When you have a decent size farm behind you it helps pay for the additions.

Is this still worth getting into? I just found out about all of this. Complete newb and looking for advice. I run OSX on a

2500k @ 4.2Ghz
16GB RAM
5870 @ stock.

Do I join a pool? Is it worth it? Literally any advice would be helpful.

Keep in mind...as more miners drop off the network because of high difficulty and BTC dropping a bit in value, this only means next set of blocks will be easier =)...so, one could simply shut off their miners when high difficulty and when it readjusts to easier...fire them back up!

I wasn't trying to sound witty. I do, however, think either you guys are all extremely naive or I'm overly cautious. You can't realistically just invent a currency and then have it be worth something in an already existing currency unless it's backed by the same thing: gold. Since bitcoins aren't backed by gold, I'll ask my question again. Why are they worth anything to anyone? Can you sell black market organs with bitcoins? Drugs? Asian women (I might be interested...)? I actually think my geek e-peen idea has the most credence. "I'm a big dork, I do nothing but upgrade my hardware for no reason, so I'm going to go bitcoin mining. Hey, look at that loser, he has half as many hashes as I have. Yep, I've arrived. I am a somebody. The king of the basement. Digitally bow before my awesome fake bank account filled with an irrelevant currency." If I'm wrong, feel free to either A) debunk my argument with factual evidence or B) provide a new and better theory with factual evidence. Why don't I have factual evidence? BECAUSE I GOOGLE'D IT AND I COULDN'T FIND ANY!!! That's why I posted here at all. Get off my case man.

I run OSX
I would be hesitant on a mac. I don't pay much attention to mac posts (I don't own any) but I do remember seeing how some people macs were dying. There was some discussion on how the mac's case (or design) wasn't able to handle heat from 100% gpu load over a long extended period of time. Which is what mining would do.

I don't know the circumstances or if it's a fluke or whatever. It may only be rumors as well. I didn't really follow up (I don't have hardware) but if I was going to do that, I would at least see if there's any truth in that. Or take precautions.

This is just a FYI. I'm not trying to encourage or discourage a mac miner.

For the record,i haven't seen anyone said this as a miner.

Something doesn't have to be backed by gold to have worth. Most things aren't backed by any precious metals (mainly gold/silver). Are there any major currency backed by gold anymore? It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay/trade it for. US Dollar isn't backed by gold, so does that make it's worthless? USD is basically backed by faith. People believe it's worth something so it's traded. Some people (even if you do not) believe bitcoins is worth something so that too is traded.

First off. Please do not get involved in mining. If you mine, difficulty goes up and my performance suffers.

Second. Cashed out over $300 thus far so not sure what else to say on how real it is.

Third. Mining for money and using the "currency" are completely different subjects. I wish I had realized this sooner. Now my skeptical view did keep me out of the game for a long time, when it was a lot more profitable primarily because I am not convinced it is a viable, long term currency. It may be, but I am not an early adopter in these things. Bottom line, debating the merit of the currency I may be on your side but mining does make money.

I have found a way to make money on stuff I already own and enjoy using, I could give a rats ass what it's really doing as long as the feds don't show up. This is my take on bitcoins, I have no current intentions of using them as currency to buy chipotle in New York, or Ties in Switzerland, but I have no issues swapping them with someone for cold hard cash which I have made a good bit of.

Why are they worth anything to anyone?

The US dollar is based on the faith in the government. Why is it worth anything?

Why are baseball cards and peoples' signatures and Beanie Babies and NASCAR toys and plates and dolls worth anything?

Personally, I think it's crazy that they are worth anything. That some dude came up with this idea and suddenly people are willing to pay money for them is pretty wild. But hey, I've cashed out about $800 worth of them now, so I ain't complainin'.

You people are a mean bunch of liars. Please stop trolling him and get off his case man. Didn't you hear how he already proved, with his thoroughly researched logic, that bitcoins should not have any value to anyone because he COULD NOT FIND ANY PROOF OF IT ON GOOGLE? :)

1970s called they want you to know that the USD is not backed by gold anymore.

That fact that you don't even know this already proves you're in no position to argue over economics.

You might think we're crazy but my bitcoin farm has already paid for itself and then some. I've pulled in about $1600 so far.

I run OSX, but that doesn't mean it's on a Mac :) Cooling will not be a problem, I'm just looking for hints.

So tradehill justed killed Dwolla completely off. I have been going the BTCguild > Tradehill > Dwolla > Bank account route and am wondering which route to take now...

I hear terrible things about paxum and really don't want to deal with setting everything up again. Looks like they will mail out checks for free. 5 Business days... Ideas?

also, 12.2 per coin makes my dual 6990s sad :( Think that the downward price is due to the changes at tradehill?
