Any advice for a very small box I could put by the router just for torrents?
I've seen the kit for the msi wind (desktop), any experience with these?

Thanks in advance!

All you really need to do is get a PC with a NIC, remote desktop (or even use Vuze which can automatically start downloading/seeding torrents that are placed in a specific directory) and little more. Don't even really need a keyboard or monitor, just get it set up and forget about it. Especially if you decide to save your torrents to a network share.

You don't need to go down the PC route. Many NAS (network hard drive) products have a BitTorrent client built in; this is something you might like to consider.

I did consider the Drobo network share NAS that has a bittorrent client, however that is pretty limited right now that I couldn't do too much else on it.Even if I chose to go the PC route I am going to dial into it, so that I wouldn't have a m k or m attached. I was thinking small atom box, does anyone have one setup right now? Or a NAS that's doing this for them?

You could, but those clients are very limited in comparison to Vuze. I wouldn't even be surprised if some trackers start banning NAS clients as they never get things like security updates.

The best way to go about doing this is build a small, low power PC. Now the OS and BT client are subjective, but if it was me, I would install either XP or Server2003 (whichever you can get cheaper), then install uTorrent. I would make a Shared directory called "Torrents", and have uTorrent "watch" that folder for .torrent files that you drop into it from your other PC's and automatically start DLing it.

That is essentially what my WHS box does. The best part is uTorrent's WebUI. I have full control just by typing in the IP of the WHS box.

Come to think of it, if you want to expand the ability of the machine you want to build, try out Windows Home Server. Its pretty slick.

I just use a PIII 933 and use uTorrent and it's web interface. Works great.

I was thinking of linux, just for stability reasons. I plan on checking the box like once every week or so. I do have access to use a server 2003 liscence, are there advantages of using server 2003 over just plain xp pro?

my server runs utorrent. Any .torrent files dropped into it's upload directory get started immediately, and dropped in a second (R:\torrents\complete\*label*) when completed. Easy to work with. Torrents dont take much computing power at all.

Depends on what you need. You can make shares and use remote desktop with XP Pro so I would just use that. You could also do all that with Linux, but it's not as easy so I would personally stick with Windows. Windows is fine as long as you don't start installing all kinds of crap on it, etc.

At least it is in my experience.

Server is definitely stable (we use it on a few of ours) but I have little hands on experience with it. I did install it to VMware on my computer so I hope to play around with it more.

I built this for a client who wanted a

and a card reader to go in the floppy slot (they just leave a empty hole behind the flip down panel) He used a flash drive to get what he wanted, then burned it in another computer, or streamed it to another computer (shared file)

The WHS box in my sig runs uTorrent from time to time. No problems, the webinterface works great.

Get one of those Atom based desktops and use UTorrent like everyone has mentioned.

For an always on torrent box only (maybe email too) I think AMD Geode based PCs are really interesting e.g. Fit-PC & Koolu

8 watts maximum power consumption!
