I picked up a Q6600 off R-Type and I'm having second thoughts. I can't find any reviews that expand on whether there are any advantages of quadcore for multiple application use. Just whether it gives bonuses to multithread capable programs. As in sig I'll be upgrading from my e7200 but be keeping the same 3- 3.5Ghz clocks. My reasoning was because I do a lot encoding/decoding yenc, Quickpar, watching h.264 movies, and playing stuff like killing floor. I'm an ADD spazz so I'm typically doing all that plus browsing and an audio editing at once.

Is this thing gonna help me out with the multitasking or am I wasting my time and should I start making plans to shill it on someone else?

Is there anything in my sig I should consider upgrading to not bottleneck the cpu? I can't do much about the hard drives since the SSD and raptor aren't capable of 1TB yet or affordable for that matter. Though I spose I could use a small SSD as a temp/download drive and use my other drives for storage?

well that was a mouthful. Slight repeat thread sorry.

it should help a bit with multi tasking. when i upgraded from my e6550 to my q6600 i noticed a bit of an improvement when running lots of programs at once. seeing how much you do at once, you should notice a decent improvement with the new quad :)

It'll help a good deal with multitasking. Even if an application has a single thread, running several of them with a quad core means your OS will have 2 more processors to schedule their threads on.

Well you encoding time should decrease by less than half. The extra cores absolutely help with multi-tasking. I wouldn't spend too much time doubting yourself.

That's absolutely what quads are best at. Enjoy

Buying a dual core isn't worth the money now. All new processors (with the exception of the i5 dual core) are quad's. Not to mention 6 core processors are coming out lol. Programs are slowly starting to be multi threaded, so having the quad will help either way. It's not like they are that much more $ anyways.

Quad's is where it's at ;)

x2, you'll be satisfied :) I had a little buyers remorse when I jumped on the quad core wagon (this was back when they were fairly expensive though) but once the system was built and running, I couldn't of been happier.

If you use a lot of multi-threaded applications, you'll probably appreciate the extra headroom

I actually saw a noticeable difference in games too and even opening regular windows applications.
