im in the middle of planning my build for my new home. im a complete novice only got into reading and "trying" to understand servers when planning this build.

going to have a full height rack with all audio,tv and servers in one rack

I am going to have a few servers.

a webserver to host my business website.
a DVR server for my home and business CCTV.
a tuner farm type set up with multiple capture cards.
you get my drift there will be other servers doing other tasks

so my few questions that follow.

with having multiple servers I want to have a central storage space possibly using the Chenbro RM91250 9U 50-Bay case or would I need to build some type of san ?

having a few servers doing dedicated tasks. would it be better to have blade servers or individual rackmount servers ?

im sure the build will have a lot more questions and should be a good build.

I wouldn't go with dedicated servers. Buy one strong server and use virtualization (KVM, Vmware, XenServer, HyperV). Resources will be better used that way. In case one server won't be anought, add another one or as many as you need and set-up a cluster with live migration.

As far as a central storage goes, it's almost nessessary if you ever decide to go with virtualization cluster. There is an option of VSAN, but that comes with a more expensive vmware package and might not be the best idea for home use.

ok I will get abit more reading done on the virtulalization side of things.

I will also look at the prices of the packages
 
having a look around would I require VMware vsphere hypervisor along with VMware V-SAN ?

by the looks of it these would fulfil my needs for now.

using that software could I just build a JBOD set up and V-san would do all the work ?

also any recommendations on what to look for on a rackmount server so it is powerful enough to handle the servers on one machine ?
 
For home use VMware vsphere hypervisor ESXi is good enough, which is also free, to some degree.

For computing power you probably want to look at Xeon E5 series CPUs, based on your current and future needs.
 
Think ive got it in my head then. Using a virtual san would i be able to connect other physical servers to it ? For example my cctv server will need interfaces etc so this would have to be physically seperate to the server hosting the virtual servers.

Yes you can. Connectivity-wise you can use iSCSI over GbE/10GbE, FCoE over 10GbE, FC, SRP/iSER over IB, etc.

For ethernet based solution you can use virtual switch (optionally with VLAN) or passthrough the NICs. For FC and IB based solution you will probably need to passthrough the HBAs.
