Why is there 1024 Kilobytes in a megabyte, not 1000K per megabyte? Ive asked several computer teachers and such, and all claim 1000K/Meg. But this isnt true, because in dos 1000K/MB doesnt add up at all.

Is there an article out there somewhere that explains this?

Because computers work in base 2. 1024 can be easily expressed in binary

10000000000

1000 on the otherhand is

1111101000

Stores use 10, 100, 1000, etc simply becuase the general public is uneducated in this matter and using 1024, etc would simply confuse them.

And most hard drive manufacturers use it that way as well.

Most of them just use the rounded numbers to represent their drives capacity.
