Biostar processor support

I have the Biostar NF61S socket AM2 motherboard. I was looking into upgrading the processor to something more recent but find the processor support list quite limiting. I have the Sempron 3400+ right now which isn't even on the support list and it run perfect. I would like to know if anyone has had luck trying a newer CPU in this board?

which newer cpu are you looking at? if its am2 i dont see why it would not work..........might need a bios update though. as long as it fits the socket. maybe call biostar tech support and ask same question might be an option.

Make sure this is your board before updating anything, but the CPU support list is probably the same.

Looks like everything short of Phenom is supported.

That's what I was afraid of. I was trying to avoid changing my motherboard ( limited cash ) nut if I can't drop an AM2+ processor in this then it's pretty much useless to upgrade it right?

A dual core would help performance a bit.

I'm looking to upgrade this computer so it'll be able to run some decent games. The last time I gamed on a computer was with a 6600gt and 2.4ghz p4. I would like to be able to play most games with max or close to max settings. I was looking into getting a 4870 graphics card and a new ( new to me ) dual core processor. Will the 512k cache compared to 1mb cache hurt the gaming performance of a processor?

The cache shouldn't hold back the processor terribly. Unless you find a good deal on a 4870, the 4850 might be a better pairing with the previously mentioned CPU. You may want to find a cpu scaling article before making your final purchase.
