Bioshock Problem...

Waiting for them to fix the issues with Bioshock 2, I decided to play the first one instead. Unfortunately, I seem to have run into a problem (apparently a very common one) that the retarded programmers over at 2k games haven't fixed in the 3 years since its been out. I'm talking of course, about the no sound issue.

Does anyone know of a solution for users of Windows 7 64bit? I've tried checking my sound options in the control panel, and the game's audio setting matches the output for my computer (stereo), but nothing has worked. Any help would be appreciated!

P.S. I mean seriously, how bad do you have to fuck up to release a game where so many people can't get sound... and still have that issue unresolved three years later? Are they morons or just lazy? If anyone from 2k is reading this, your level of incompetence astounds me.

And someone on another thread didn't believe me that there were still problems with this game. Go figure.

I'll try to look up a post on the forums.. I think I remember there was some workaround for this.

I'm not trying to be a jerk but it's incompetence... I don't remember the sound issue, have you tried all of the in game audio options? What kind of sound card are you using?

No this is an issue, I believe its part of the stickies on the steam forums. Though the most prevalent problem was the CTD's, changing res and going to CTD's. To get my BS1 to run smoothly on steam, I had to log off my steams friends list, edit my bioshock.ini with the resolution I wanted it in, with v-sync off etc. It ran fine after that. Seemed like the game would freeze/crash whenever I got a message -- The only game that did this for me.

Thank god BS2 solved all my issues -- it runs much better than the first.

lol, sorry, it was 3AM when I posted this. Don't worry, I appreciate the irony of calling someone out for incompetence while misspelling incompetence!

I believe I just have integrated sound (whatever came with my motherboard, though I don't believe it's the Realtek one so many people had issues with). I'm just using headphones, so I assumed the in-game 'stereo' sound option would work.

- Enable Stereo mixing, to do this browse to Start > Control Panel > Sound (in classic view). Once done switch to the Recording tab which will show the currently active inputs on your system (e.g. Line in, Microphone). Right click in the clear space below these devices and select the option for Show disabled devices. This should show an additional device called Stereo mixing, right click on this device and select Enable.

I'm using Realtek HD audio on my rig along with EAX enabled in game and it runs just fine. I geuss about the only thing I would try doing is updating your drivers.

I just had a thread about problems with this game so I'll shoot. Try running the game in xp compatibility mode (some links I found said this fixes it) I had a crashing issue if I didn't use -nosound on the shortcut and openal fixed whatever the problem was. You may want to try downloading that. Goodluck.

Okay, so apparently I'm a noob... after searching around, I've discovered that my motherboard does in fact use the Realtek audio for sound. Long story sort, after downloading some drivers and enabling the Stereo Mixing option worked and now the game runs fine.

Still find it absolutely pathetic that this was an issue in the first place, but whatever, it works now.

Yes, it is pathetic it is an issue in the first place - But the developers of Bioshock are not at blame here. Make sure your putting the blame on the proper party - That party is Realtek. They are well known for having buggy drivers.

You're right, my blame might be misplaced, but you can't blame me for thinking something is wrong with the game when every other game worked just fine.
