I think the atmosphere in my opinion can best be defined as American McGee's Alice meets Myst. discuss. ;)

Add a dab from the "It" from Stephen King and we get a accurate picture :)

Well put....though I lay claim to the comparison to Alice earlier :)
Over the past few years, we have been awash with terrorist shooters, military sim games, or future shooters. Its rare that we get a spaced out and bizarre game. Something thats a horror/fantasy, but without wizards and elven ears.

Ugh! That movie was terrifying! I agree the atmosphere was unlike anything i have ever felt. Almost like the immersion you feel during STALKER. Even though it was a buggy pos. :p

You know, I'd also throw in just a DASH of the first Alien movie. I JUST picked up my copy on lunch break and haven't delved into it yet besides the demo, but it has that palpable sense of isolation and terror that made Alien great. :)

Rapture == Nostromo, crazed voices/big daddy sounds in the darkness == sound of footsteps and snarling in the darkness, etc..

Just IMO.

Yeah the game has a very good atmosphere, always keeps you on your toes :)

And speaking of footsteps, do you guys always here people behind you, or do I need to swap from surround sound back to stereo.

I heard that too. At one point during the demo I was in the bathroom for the first time, looked back because maybe there was some health or adam I missed, and the moment I turned back, I could have SWORN I saw a shadow move. I tried to replicate it again, but nothing. Creeped me out.

I just played the demo on the machine in my sig. I had to drop one of the graphics options off and play at 1024x768, it got a little choppy with alot going on, but it reminded me of System Shock 2 and I loved that game so much. I actually got them to reserve me a copy at Wal-Mart. I am looking forward to playing it over the next few days.

Oh yeah I saw that too, but I mean all the time it sounded like people were walking all around me...

That is part of the atmosphere. IGN brought this up on how you can hear the Big Daddies and water pressure if you just stand still and listen.

The positioning on the sound of your own footsteps is a little bit off - it sounds as though your own footsteps are coming from behind you. Or maybe they did that to creep people out...

I wonder about that, too. There are a few audio settings to choose from so perhaps changing that will change the way the audio is presented. I'm using a pair of high-end headphones and have the audio set to stereo. I'll try the other settings just to see what happens.

The game borrows *heavily* from Ayn Rand. The entire concept of Rapture is straight out of Atlas Shrugged. The philosophy of that Ryan dude are very objectivist.

It's no surprise that the art and architecture of the game also borrow heavily from the art associated with Rand's books.

The mechanical 30-50's era design type can best be related to Myst in my opinion... I couldn't think of a better comparison. The audio in this game is fantastic, it really compliments the artwork and atmosphere nicely. The most important thing is the atmosphere is convincing. So many games nowadays are not convincing in the least bit, they throw some cheap effects at you, remove daylight from the equation, and call it atmosphere. Both System Shock 2, and Bioshock are convincing with their atmospheres.. you believe you're in deep space, alone.. and you believe you're in a underwater world, alone. I can't put my finger on how they do it, but they do.

Ok so its not just me, good to know... hmm well sounds like stereo mode won't fix it, but I'll try anyway.

With all the Neon and Art Deco stuff it reminds me of the movie Blade Runner.
