I thought i could get to the bios without ram installed?

I just received all my new components - except the ram - and tried to start PC.. Just get series of beeps which i thought indicated "power error" - but could it be that the ram is not installed?

I really hope that's the problem as i've tried everything else! RAM’s coming Monday.

Many thanks to anyone who replies..

If you're looking for a second opinion...

I concur, you will need ram in order to get to bios.

Feww! Thank you for your replies.. I'd tried everything - taking MB out, CPU out, tested wires.. I guess I should have had a little more patience and waited for the memory!

LoL. Once the ram comes in, the computer shall come ALIVE!!

I don't see the point in trying to boot a pc without he ram , like starting the car without petrol ? Monster of Frankenstein without a brain ? What's up next booting the rig without a heatsink ? Where do you guys get these ideas ?

Not everyone has the same tech knowledge as others. Thats why they post messages so people that do can pass on their knowledge. No point to see, except that he wanted to know if its OK that it can't post without the RAM. Sure he could have google'd it, or something, but he decided to ask. Now he has the answer and as you can see it has relieved his anxiety.

We also buy the idea's in bulk, cheaper that way ;)

My fear is as a system builder, that many peeps these days build computers or thinking they are building them , but try all sorts of weird stuff when things don't work, sometimes damaging hardware all due to a lack of knowledge... and then some come back and flame that the mobo is a piece of junk...

I can understand the post clearly though : I wouldn't start anything on my rigs till all the vital elements are complete (mobo , cpu x heatsink, ram and vidcard ) he had dissambled the rig, verified stuff, did he take care of his static electricity ? another vital point to think off, many many users seem to build their mobo's first on the static bag, big no no :D

If you don't know what you are doing pls ask around first before putting any current through it... it's really not my intention to attack anyone here but nowadays people seem to know everything and due to that self esteem many run into big problems....

I cross my fingers to see the thread starter get his rig going soon....

....

What I like to do is put on a pair of wool socks, and rub my feet on a shag carpet for a good 15 to 30 minutes. REALLY build up a static charge. Then, I like to touch something on the motherboard, any part that's metal to discharge the static into the motherboard. Way I see it, this gives it a bit extra "juice" to power up, to make sure the initial post goes off right. Kind of like warming up a car right before taking it out for a long drive. Really, this works well! Would I lie? :D

(And yes, I am joking. If you REALLY do this...you've been forewarned, I am joking! :) )

I know it didn't sound like it - but i have actually built 3-4 rigs before (still not a lot I know).. Although the last one was in 2000 (200w PSU!) so it has been a while.

I think i got this 'silly' idea in my head from misreading a post somewhere.. I was trying to get into the bios so I could flash it with the latest rom - one less thing to do one the RAM arrived..

I had googled the question before but wanted to double check. Anyway - many thanks for all the replies.. :)

Keep us posted how the rig will run mate and don't do this ever again :p

By the way I always wear wool socks :D

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought in the old days you could get into BIOS without having external RAM installed because the board had onboard RAM? Of course, I only have a couple of computers and I'm not a system builder. (I just fold like a mad rabbit with what little gear I have) :D

ok, i consider myself a computer builder, somewhat expert. why cant you build it on the static bag?

Only the inside of the antistatic bag is antistatic. Thats how they work. So if you cut the bag open and build it on the inside layer, you're golden. Outside, no

It is generally considered a bad idea, since static electricity will literally bounce off the surface of the bag. So any static that does hit the bag is even more likely to hit the board, since it will jump around on the bag. Think of it as a shield. Great if you are behind it, but if you are in front, there's nowhere to go but straight into the enemy spears.

EDIT - Dang, you beat me. Also, I've heard it slightly different, anybody got a third-opinion to confirm which is right?

ah alright thanks guys, wont do that again lol, never killed anything with static though so cant be too bad.

15 or 16 years now, and I've never killed anything with static, ever. It's not being lucky, it is simply not the problem people try to make it out to be.

I had several DOA's ( especially ram and a few mobo's ) I think noone can ever make sure if it was due to bad luck , static, bad hardware, misfortune , someone above not liking me ? Pretty hard to tell why some parts do not want to work...
