I was looking forward to updating my HTPC tonight and decided to update the BIOS first. Asus motherboard, so I used the Asus Update Utility. It decides to fail after erasing the BIOS. Kind of sucks as I had a nice new HTPC case and everything.

Does Best Buy or any other store sell motherboards? I know CompUSA did, but they are gone. Best Buy's website only shows motherboards for sale online. I guess I could just order one on the Internet and wait a couple of days, but I don't have much patience.

I dont know about Asus but MSI will cover a botched bios under warranty... you should look into that

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Asus have a backup of your previous bios on the motherboard? You might want to read your motherboard manual for this and maybe you can revert back to bios you had.

There is a Microcenter near you, kinda. Google says its 30 minutes from your city.

the asus update utility gets another person?

i got burned by that on my p5k. i had to rma the board, it took a month. the one thing i learned.....

NEVER FLASH IN WINDOWS!!!!

Even if there is, it would be kind of hard to get to considering it doesn't boot at all. Turns on, turns off, turns on, turns off.

Yeah, I went to use the Easy Flash within the BIOS and it wouldn't allow me to browse the hard drive to access the ROM file. Maybe that should of been my indication that there was something already wrong to begin with.

If you have a back up bois chip on your board I think you need to put the backup chip where your main is I think. Some one who knows more about this can help more then I can.

funny, that is the same thing i did. when i got my rma board i used a cd. worked perfect.

Yeah... Drop .bin/.rom file on a flash drive, boot into BIOS, flash there. Easy.

There is only one chip on the board that comes out. So I don't think I will be swapping anything.

the power on, power off loop is what mine did when i had the bad flash.

Did you know if you put the chip back in the wrong way it gets really hot? Oops!

my MSI board allows me to load a bios on a flash drive... can you asus do that?

On both of my Gigabyte mobos, I could update the BIOS from a flash drive so long as the BIOS file is not on a FAT32 or NTFS volume on the flash drive. This means that Gigabyte only supports FAT12/16 volumes on a flash drive or HDD for BIOS updating.

I don't know about Asus. But some Asus motherboards as late as the P5K series supported only legacy floppy or a CD.

yes you can. the windows flash seems so easy, it is tempting. what could go wrong, it is a tool posted on their website. they wouldnt put somthing there that doesnt work, or would they?

I am not talking about flashing, I am talking about booting from a bis when/if your bios flash goes bad

There is a bios backup file on the motherboard cd.
So if you can boot with the cd in the drive, the board should start searching for a bios file automatically
