Bios modification, is anyone doing it?

Has anyone used one of those bios tweaking tools for editing graphics cards bios for more voltages or tweaking timings for the gddr memory? Can they be used safely? For example, If the modification states to increase the vcore by 0.1, is the actual increase likely to be 0.1 or can it go all wrong resulting in me crying over my dead card?
Do you know of any good links/forums specialized on this matter?

thx

I have an EVGA 7800GT and soft-modded it with a BIOS flash from www.ngohq.com. It did increase the voltage 0.1 volts and I was able to pull out more mhz on both the core and memory whilst only increasing the temps by 2-3C idle.

I did the BIOS voltmod on my eVGA 7800GT without issue. It added about 30mhz to my core overclock...

So the gains are there however it seems like the lower clocked versions of the same gpu ( 6600, 7600GS, 7900GT etc...) might benefit more from bios modding rather than lets say a 6600GT, 7600GT, 7900GTX as they are clocked nearer the limit of the gpu anyway. Of course, there should always be gems among these too.

You might gain a little bit on both the core and memory but the increase will not translate into a viewable difference. Meaning, don't bother its not worth the risk. In gaming if you cant see a difference, there is no difference.

I have spent many hours tweaking bioses for my 6800GT...

and now that one can test memory timings in windows with nibitor (x64 too!) it's even more addicting (but at the same time sortof futile)...

just don't flash a bios with too tight timings... that will get you a dead card even to blind flashing unless you have an old PCI card laying about.

more volts is cool.... just make sure!!! you have the voltage regulator heatsink mounted on the card well lapped with some good TIM. otherwise your card is going to not last as long. this will also help you get a higher OC (and for longer).

I think the 6800 (nv40) series is the most fun to mod of all...

Hey guys I would really appreciate some advise here, I posted this on NVnews but all I got was that the card was broken.

I took the liberty to overclock my AGP Sparkle 6800 GT to ultra speeds using cool bits 2 to 400 core and 1100 memory and it seemed to be working fine for a couple of days until I noticed some artifacting so I reduced it down to stock speeds but found games like Fear and Oblivion ran poorly at stock speeds.

Filled with the urge to obtain something for nothing in this world I edited the bios and ran the core at 1.4 volts after slapping the GPU with artic silver 5, I have a lian li pc-70 full server case and it's now Autum here in Australia so temperatures are not a problem.

2 weeks later after some Battlefield 2 action I turn my PC for a while then on again to discover blue "Sparkles" all over my games

The Good news is that 2d and watching DVD's seem unaffected however any 3d Game I load will be covered in blue snow.

Through the DVI output it seems to be totally corrupted when displaying the Asus Post screen on my P4C800 - Deluxe but loading the Memtest 3.2 screen seems fine weird hey?
The windows desktop seems totally unaffected once the driver is loaded before it was artifact city.

The card is only 1 year old but because it was bought interntionally Sparkle refuse to support the card;

Is there any way to repair the card myself? I have not heard a reply from Sparkle and I would like to know what options are open to me, IE replacing faulty Capacitors or is there irrepairable GPU damage?

Thanks for reading

Dan
