Bios Flashing Question!

When attempting bio flashing, i.e. 9800pro - 9800xt/x800pro -x800xt-pe. Does it have a risk of the GPU frying? Or something "bad" that would happen to the graphics card?
 
That is always a possibility, especially if the flash is interrupted (power goes out or something). More than likely a flash will go OK, just don't do it during a thunderstorm.
 
so, for example, the x800pro flashing to a x800xt-pe is safeproof unless the power goes out? Well of course when the power goes out due to a power outage, your comp at any state can fry a componant.
 
It is like making your computer think the, for example, the x800pro is the x800xt-pe. Therefore, your x800 pro card will clock almost or at the same as the x800xt-pe.

Flashing to the X800 XT with a X800 Pro VIVO is not guaranteed. You may kill your card.
 
Hmm... in what circumstances will it fry? Just attempting the flash?

Well, it's entirely possible that a new revision of the VIVOs will come out and the BIOS flash might not work on it. That wouldn't be the first time it happened with ATI cards (the Saphire 9800LE was it?). Also, one (or more) of the four disabled pipes could be damaged or non-functional causing who knows what kind of side effects. There's even some reports that the flashed cards just start randomly dieing after a short amount of time, but it's mostly unsubstantiated.

It's entirely likely that if you flash a VIVO it will work out. However, you have to be aware that there is always the possibilty that it won't.

True, you might get a bad or incomplete flash. The chances of actually "FRYING" your GPU or DDR from a BIOS flash are slim to none. But just the same a bad or incomplete flash may render your video card inoperable. There is an amount of risk you must assume any time you mod a device.

The "RUMOR" about x800's that were flashed to XT's mysteriously dying is completely bogus s far as I can tell. Across many forums I have not heard from a single person that has ACTUALLY had this happen to them. If this were the case I'm sure not so many of us would be rushing to mod our pricey Pro's to XT speeds. Mine is working just fine so far. There have been a few bad flashes, a number with pipes that were no good to begin with and a few folks who burnt them up trying to Vmod. Other than the usual mishaps nothing more to report.
