Sounds like a big deal right? Well, when the amount is just 0.5 percentage points, it’s not quite as impressive. Still, winning any search share away from Google is a victory, especially when you consider how anemic Live Search was doing until Microsoft mercy-killed and replaced it with Bing.

Microsoft, which launched Bing in early June, racked up 8.9 percent of U.S. Internet searches in July, up 0.5 percentage points from June. Google, the leader in the market, and Yahoo, the distant No. 2, both lost 0.3 percentage points of market share in July, to 64.7 percent and 19.3 percent, respectively.

Bing is my default search engine now. If I don't get what I want I switch over to Google, I use them both all the time now, either one is giving me pretty much the same results. Google isn't as special as it used to be which isn't much of a suprise.

How? It just annoys me to use it- It doesn't have most of the revelant site that I have wanted to go to on the fist page, when google does.

It'll revert back once Bing cashback is over.

Maybe Google would do something like that if they feel their search engine threatened by Microsoft? :D

It took a while, but I actually like the feel of Bing better than Google now. I'm not crazy about the colors they use in Bing Maps though. There's not enough contrast in some cases. So printed maps aren't as easy to read as Google Maps.

Bing image search is much better.

I do however love how my Gmail account is mixed into my home page with Google, that is going to be hard to switch from.

i had to switch my start page to bing from the firefox default..once i did that i got used to bing and i agree, i enjoy it more.

At least it's better than that horrible live search. Though I still prefer google.

0.5, not even an entire integer ... that really doesn't qualify as news worthy. I'll check back in a year

is this including bs search results due to hijacking machines to bing.com?

Hijacking machines? In all the hundreds of computers I've updated, I've never come across one single machine where an IE browser update or Live Essentials install or Windows Update or anything at all changing employee's Google (or Yahoo) preferences to Bing.

What hijacking?

What hijacking?

1. MSN front page is loaded with "bing search" hyperlinks. Hell, they even have a "bing searches" section now.

2. Tons of people still have MSN as their front page.

1 + 2 --> more Bing searches for free

Well golly Trep, MSN belongs to Microsoft, so yeah they're gonna use Bing. That's not hijacking. You're welcome to change your start page.

In fact when you install IE8 and run it for the first time, it ask you if you want to change your home page and search. Ditto Live Essentials. Ditto IE7.

Lets take your arguement further. Why didn't Live Search get ahead? It was also on MSN.com before Bing.

Could it be that people like Bing?

I've been entirely using it for cash back. Saw this thread and actually tried using it for search purposes and it turns out I got better results than google. Maybe I will try using this. I still like the feel/look of google better, but bing doesn't look/feel TOO bad.

Well it actually does. People know know for a fact that it ONLY went up half an integer. Otherwise MS would talk about doubling their market share while forgetting to mention that they are still in the single digits overall.

Or that Bing just doesn't suck. It is much easier to not suck then to be considered good or better than something else.

That makes too much sense. It's easier to accuse Microsoft of hijacking our browser ;)

I've actually been using Bing for the last few weeks, and I have to say the quality of content that I am able to find is better than Google. I've been happy with it. And the "farecast" technology is cool too...

There's a little Bing.com thorn in my side due to it being smeared all over NBC's The Philanthropist, but it's probably more NBC's fault.

I like the pretty pictures on the mainpage otherwise they're all the same to me.

I'm guilty of inflating this number a bit due to the Bing cashback deals. :D

2. Tons of people still have MSN as their front page.

Ignorance. I have had MSN as my front page for a few years. It has a variety of interesting content. Their commenting system is pretty ridiculous, though

I haven't used bing, though.

Bing has given me no reason to switch.

It feels like they designed it to be pretty and forgot about usability. The site is flashy (AJAX-y, I suppose), but the added weight does not yield a gain in my eyes. Perhaps the average consumer is won over by the images and overabundance of onRollOver pop-ups, however, what it really leads to is too much abstraction of data and too little focus on what is actually being shown to a user without their interaction.

That said, I am very biased, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

It does have some nice features:
- The extra meta information about sites on hover is nice, but showier than it is useful
- The video search is interesting, but video results are very poorly mixed with normal results leading to poor discoverability and too much dependence upon tabbing
- Travel search is nice
- The product search pages are laid out better

But they are overshadowed by the number of detractions:

- The big one: it's slower, around 50-100 ms on average when I have good service, and seconds slower when I don't
- Its normal results are at best the same and at worst wildly irrelevant, I haven't found any cases where I preferred the bing results
- Its maps are harder to use and provide worse results
- Its local search is absolutely lacking
- Its image search is much worse - no metadata initially visible means that you'll spend way more time looking for size/quality of image you want - plus google has it beat with the labs feature "similar image search"
- Result mixing is done poorly and lack of delineation stunts usability

+1 to BombermanXs comment. Though I have had one or two cases where I preferred bing results in normal searches.

Lol @ MSN comment system. Take a look at the Money discussion forum: on any given day, if the market is up, posts look like this:

Post: "Suckers! Enjoy your rally while it lasts! The government is lying to us; the US financial system is in shambles! The crash is just days away! Good thing I'm in cash: enjoy your depression everyone!"
Meaning: I missed this big rally and am upset about that, so I'm going to convince myself that staying out of the market was the right decision even though it went up because it's going to crash soon anyway."

If the market is down, posts look like this:

Post: "OMG! The Depression is starting! Everything will crash now; this is only the beginning. I hope Obama is happy with the society he has driven into the ground. I hope you all enjoyed it: prosperity is over! Never to be seen again! We might start to recover ten years from now. This will make 1929 look like a credit crunch!"
Meaning: I lost money when the market when down today. To make myself feel better, I'm going to convince myself that everyone else is about to experience hardship with me, and money soon won't matter anymore.

It's like that every single day. Ridiculous.

As for Bing vs. Google, I still use Google. It just gives me better results. Bing may have a better-designed website with more useful features, but it's the results that count, and Google still wins in that department. Here's one prominent example: at work (lab technician), I had to replace a thermal switch on a vacuum furnace with no information about when or where it was originally purchased. I found a model number on the device, and entered the number into both search engines:

Bing: no results
Google: page full of distributors selling the part

Google found what I needed; Bing did not. IMO, Bing is currently the thorn in Google's side that keeps their R&D department in full swing, but Google is still a step ahead. Sort of like what Apple has done to MS in the past five years, Bing is now doing to Google.

I use them both, Bring is way better for shopping and finding news on upcoming or already released item, while Google is still way too awsome for finding out information on something that you have little to knowledge on.

For example Googles first 5 searches on "poisonous gecko's" gave me all the answers I needed, Bing game me skewed results.

When I was looking to compare Plasma's, Kuro, Kuro Elite, Viera, Sony, Samsung 650+ or the S1 panel vs. the G10 panel (they are both the exact same!) Bring gave me every bit of info I needed, I was also able to find out my current Klipsch 5.1 surround set up (completely step by step process not an all in one purchase) was great and I don't need to upgrade!

So I like both, Bring makes shopping easier too and I wish the cash back stuff wasn't so prominent... although I do use it sometimes :D

Is it just me or the Name Bing sound completely retarded.

Yeah dude just go Bing it..

VS

Yeah dude just Google it.

Plus I found finding relevant info not concerning pissing money on useless shit Bing sucks lemons.

I like google simply for.... well... its simplicity.

Clean white background, black and blue, non-fancy font, no BS to load. And it gives me the results I need/care about.

I was trying to explain Bing to my dad. I couldn't explain it so I told him to just google it. lol.

I honestly have better luck with yahoo than with google.
Yea I can agree. But I have better luck with Bing than either one.

IMO I like Yahoo's front page better than anything else. I can't wait until they finally get their search driven by Bing...

Saw this thread and actually tried using it for search purposes and it turns out I got better results than google.
Amazing what happens when folks have an open mind ;)

It feels like they designed it to be pretty and forgot about usability. The site is flashy (AJAX-y, I suppose), but the added weight does not yield a gain in my eyes.

Yea, a whole 0.02MB is a whopper

Perhaps the average consumer is won over by the images and overabundance of onRollOver pop-ups,
To be able to peek at a page before going to it? Huge plus.
To be able to preview videos before loading the whole big version? Huge plus.

Worse? Last I checked Google didn't have this kind of refinement:

Thanks for the well-thought our reply, Techie!

The image on the front page of Bing is the size of an entire Google load, though I don't use iGoogle and I don't need its functionality in general.

I denoted that onRollOver preview was interesting, but I truly do not find it useful, if it is a huge plus for you, then I am very happy for you. Though I still have serious doubts about its usefulness in the average case.

As for the image search, the refinement is great but Google does have most of these features though -- they are just not as nicely exposed, I'll give bing the layout there. The removal of the meta from the results page is a detriment to the usability and that was my point. I shouldn't have to roll over an image to view meta. Additionally, any feature you see on the left there is bested by similar image search:

http://similar-images.googlelabs.com/

The thing is, even on dial-up, 0.02 MB is nothing. That's 20KB. Nothing.

I know what the next retort would be (as I've heard it before) "I don't want to load 20KB on every page when Google only loads 8KB".

Guess what? When it comes to search results, you're actually loading more data with Google than Bing:
3839668055_dbd9e17033_o.jpg

Thus, the only thing "Bigger" in size is your home page. And with the increase in search-from-browser searches, even that's becoming a non-issue.

The next argument I'd hear? "Well, Bing's image search is so glitzy, it'll lose that." Wrong again. For some reason IE doesn't grab the page size so my screens are from FireFox here, but here's Google versus Bing image search:
3839678045_6423e6ba25_o.jpg

Bing actually improves that over time as since you don't have to load each page again, all it does is load the new images. You don't have to reload all the HTML, CSS again and again and again like with Google.

So what if the front page is 12KB more? That's a ridiculous amount to be concerned about even on dial up much less a desktop where most people do their work. Plus, even with more "Glitter" than Google, Bing still loads less than Google does.

I set my homepage to google, but as a fair shake, I use bing, yahoo, etc to see what is most usefull.

For kicks and grins I even did a video search... Bing uses a HEFTY 3KB more than Google's does.
Plus it has all the video preview features that Google doesn't. Pretty darn good tradeoff for 3KB :p

^^^
I'm not a Bing user but wouldn't the screen shots you are comparing above simply be the .html code for page and not the graphics and images that they contain?

I mean, HTML, CSS, etc. are essentially text. Real bandwidth happens when you load images, Flash, etc…

Honestly, I haven’t give Bing a fair chance. My instinct tells me to go to Google every time I need to search for something…

Could be. No idea... When it says "Page Size" though I'd assume it's everything.
