I want to get a bigger display and hook it up to my notebook and use it as my main screen and use the laptop display as a secondary. It has an 8400GMS for the GPU. What's the largest I can go? I was hoping to get a 24 or 30 inch but the 30 inch seems like overkill for basic stuff such as word proccessing, web browsing and some minor gaming(i.e Portal)

Would a 24 be good for my needs or should I get a 20 or 22?

With that gpu in mind I'd suggest a 1680 x 1050 resolution monitor. I guess you could just get a 24 incher and play games at lower than native res also.

Your notebook won't push a 30" at native res (very few notebooks do, less to do with video card and more to do with cost savings by the mfg). If you are not gaming a 24 or 27" should be great. they both run 1920x1200 and will look really good. If you are gaming, 1680x1050 is even pushing it a bit.
