hey, i am in desperate need for a bigger case as my mid tower is just not cutting it in terms of space. i am almost totally broke at the moment and am looking at cases. i have a neighboor who has an old gateway 2000 that they don't use. i was hoping to get that, gut it and use it as my case. (of course using some spray paint etc.) i was curisous as to if my atx board would fit in it.
 
I'm currently using that case and yup ATX's fit fine.

As for it really beign big, It's tall, oh is it tall, but you might be disappointed in the end with how roomy it really is stock. From the floppy cage and up it's abotu as cramped as any other case and there's very very little room for the PSU, so you better watch it with modular ones.

I found that Ultra's X-connects wont fit at all. The 5 1/4" drive cage is about three inches from my FSP Group PSU's body, and my Optical drives stick out far enough to be pushed against it's cords.

BUT, this thing is fun to play with and easy to mod. I'm in the middle of a project with it at the moment and it's been real cooperative lol, so it's definitely got that going for it.
 
from the pic ive seen it doesnt look like the rear panel of a current mobo will fit without modding. is this true ?
 
if you're talking about the i/o cover and the various i/o gadgets it fits fine, unless the gateway2000 came in different flavors of form factor that I'm unaware of.
 
yeah thats what i was talking about. i have seen a few different setups of the gateway 2000 case some are older and some are newer. is it possible for you to send a pic of your so i can compare ?

An old build it had. You can kinda see how the i/o junk fit in, even without the mobo faceplate.

In these two pics you can see the general size and shape of the I/O opening. it has room for the double width i/o plates, so it shouldnt be any problems if mines identical to your neighbor's.
