It's been 5 days since I first began folding. Now I'm ready to make the jump to -bigadv. The current flags I'm using are -smp 8 -verbosity 9 -advmethods. Do I change the flags to -smp 8 -verbosity 9 -bigadv or -smp 8 -verbosity 9 -advmethods -bigadv? I don't plan on using VM. I don't think I need it but if I do, let me know and I'll set everything up in VM.

Need to know what rig I'm using? Click the following link:

We updated the -bigadv guide. Follow it and you will do just fine. (In the guides sticky)

Linuxrouter's VM basically tells you what flags to put in, but the command at the prompt is

./fah6 -bigadv -smp 8

VM's are real easy...don't be leery. I was leery, kind of freaked out actually...thought it would be a ton of work. It's not. Very simple...install the VMware player, unzip the VM image, open VMware player, open the VM, change the ram to slightly more ram (I run mine set on 5gb), run the VM, enter that at the prompt and Fold baby Fold. :D Minimize the VMware player and use your computer as usual. If you need to quit Folding for any reason (updates, to play a game etc.) go into the VM and either hit Control+C to quit Folding, then close the VMware player, **or** go to the VM menu, choose Suspend, then close the VMware player when it's back at the default screen.

If you're going to use the computer for anything or you're going to run gpu's with it the use the -smp 7 flag.

any difference in performance using the -smp 7 flag? I'm using -smp 8 and folding gpu's at the same time, i get like a 300ppd knock from the video cards. What kind of ppd would you expect for -smp 7 vs -smp 8?

According to most reports -smp 7 actually has more ppd than -smp 8. Also, in my experience with running gpu's with -smp 8 there just isn't any cpu left to let the gpu's run full bore.

interesting, something i'll have to experiment with. I also set the priority of the vm to idle in the config file.

I'm getting 10.5k ppd on my core i7 at 3.8ghz and 9.8k ppd at 3.45ghz (without bonus). Sound low?

Get HFM.NET and it will calc the bonus for you. Then let us know what kind of ppd you are getting.

Running a VM in windows, I was getting close to same numbers.

Some people reported seeing higher performance with -smp 7 versus -smp 8 but in my experience it was the reverse. I don't have -bigadv running on my main system because it's one of the slowest systems in my farm and it has only 4 cores. On my more capable dedicated Windows 8-core systems, the -smp 8 flag proved much better, and I have dual GPU clients on these systems as well. It depends what you're doing with your system and probably the architecture you run will play some role.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for taking the time to help me out and for the great tips. I hope to successfully start on my first -bigadv tonight. Even though I was a little intimidated by folding, it was everyone here that helped guide me through. Thanks again!

Your more than welcome.

It's why we hang out here. Someone helped me in the past, many continue to....

Got some questions. I edited the VM to use 6gb or ram. I tried to run it and it says 'the virtual machine is configured to run 8 cpus but the VM Player only supports 4 cpus.' so it won't run. I'm using the latest VM Player 3.0.1. I also want to run the VM using 7 cores. Do I edit the VM to use 7 cores and use the -smp 7 -bigadv -verbosity 9 flag to run FAH?

The rumor is that this new verion of VMWare limits to 4 cores. Get your fingers on 3.0.0

you gotta use VM Player 3.0.0 - that one won't let you run over 4 cores. you can still download 3.0.0 off of the vmware site

Alright wtf? I thought I was making my own thread... Sorry for the hijack guys...

What's the proper way to turn off the VM without losing anything so I can resume from where I left off? Would I CTRL+C to end the folding then at the top click VM, click Power and then click Power Off? To suspend, do I leave the folding running and click VM, click Power and then Suspend?

Also to make the 50,000 bonus, I have to complete the folding within 2.7 days. Is that 2 days and seven hours?

Either way.
Control+C, wait for cores to go back to idle, then go VM > Shut Down. Once it goes to the main screen you can minimize or close VMware player.
*or*
VM > Suspend on a running VM. It saves a suspend file, goes to the main screen...you can minimize or close VMware player.

2.7 days is 2 days and .7 days or 7/10ths of a day, figure about 2 days and 18 hours. (obviously 2.5 days would be 2 days and a half a day or 12 hours)
2 days 7 hours is more like 2.25 days. (goofy math but hopefully you get it)
