VMware is hosting a webcast event titled Cloud Infrastructure takes a major step forward; Raising the bar Part V' today at 9 AM Pacific Time, Deutsche Bank writes.
Although there is no official word from VMware on what the announcement will be, our educated guess is that Part V' in the title of the event suggests that it would be the release of vSphere 5. Features and enhancements expected to be included in the new release will improve VMW's competitive advantage and expand its opportunity. We also expect licensing and pricing changes.

So if you use TPS and over commit, you'll have to "over buy". I think 32GB is way too low per-socket. Our standard 2-socket build is 96GB now. So if you want to use most of that (leave some for HA) you'll still need 3-sockets of license for that 2-socket server. Not happy.

Still have to run it on Apple xServes.. which are no longer in production.. I wonder if this requirement will be listed, trying to run a bunch of Mac Pro's would not be fun, they are far too big.
It's going to push a lot of people to look very hard at how they provision VMs and tools to monitor them will become very popular, very fast. Most of my customers over provision VMs, especially memory. I think we'll see that trend change.
I got one of the Mac Pro servers coming. Not looking forward to losing 12u of rack space for one server.
So how I'm taking your comment is that I can run vsphere 5 on a mac server but not run OS X server on my Dell hardware running vSphere?

Unfortunately, this wreaks of another cash grab, like Enterprise Plus was.
We've constantly encouraged customers to purchase as much RAM per host that they can afford. With how powerful CPUs are today, RAM is almost always the first constraint. Now it appears there will be many customers needing to purchase MORE licenses just to go to vSphere 5.
That is going to piss off MANY customers.
Hrm, you did hear it right though, you're talking about virtual ram assigned to the VMs... not physical memory in the hosts. The host capacity is essentially free.
I think this is great as it places even more burden on server huggers to right size.
Rumors are that Enterprise Plus is 48GB per socket.
Except for the client I just installed some Cisco B250 M2 blade servers for. Each has a pair of 6 core CPUs and 192GB of RAM running vSphere Enterprise. Now, if they go to vSphere 5, they'll only be able to actively use 96GB of that RAM (if Enterprise also gets 48GB of vRAM per socket) with the new license scheme unless they purchase more licenses.
That sucks.
I can see a lot of customers staying at vSphere 4.1 indefinitely unless the licensing changes on 5.
Thanks for the link. That means the client I mentioned will only be able to allocate 64GB of their RAM per host if they go straight to vSphere 5 Enterprise.
The other alternative is to buy an additional 16 vSphere 5 Enterprise licenses (4 blades with 2 CPUs and 192GB RAM each) or replace their Enterprise licenses with 16 Enterprise Plus licenses.
Either way, they'll need to pay tens of thousands of dollars if they want to go to vSphere 5 and be able to allocate all the RAM they bought.
