i'm excited, our vCD implementation is about to take off and curious how this will be affected.
 
Can't wait to get this into the lab. Lots of improvements here to make my life easier. One thing I can't find info on that I want is VMFS5 as well as how they are handling internal datastores. Would be great to finally bust through that 2TB limit.

The HA stuff looks great too, removing DNS dependency and now a vCenter Appliance.

Not convinced at all on this new licensing model. I need to sit and do some math.
 
Actual pricing hasn't been released yet. Basically, a socket of like Enterprise will give you 32GB of vRAM to allocate. Based on allocation, not physical RAM. So if you use TPS and over commit, you'll have to "over buy". I think 32GB is way too low per-socket. Our standard 2-socket build is 96GB now. So if you want to use most of that (leave some for HA) you'll still need 3-sockets of license for that 2-socket server. Not happy.
 
The licencing sounded good..but can't say for sure until I see the new model..ooops...looks like Netjunkie just outlined it...ewwww..not liking that at all. Memory is the one resource that we are constantly adding..or making sure that we have a ton of.

Really like where vSphere is going...and policy based provisioning is really going to be helpful. UCS and vSphere 5 looks like it's going to be great..can't wait to test this out.

That just plain sucks. I am hoping they are reducing the cost of the licenses.

Looking over the licensing now and it looks like if you have Enterprise Plus licensing then you can 48GB of vRAM to allocate per socket. 24GB per socket if you have Standard licensing. We have Enterprise Plus licensing and our UCS blades are 2 sockets with 96GB of RAM so we would still only need 2 licenses per blade.

It will probably allow unlimited RAM on that standalone host. You can't have the vCenter agent which is basically the main crippling restriction. Just a guess of mine tho :).
 
any word on max LUN sizes in vsphere 5?

One preview article only said 2+ TB but no maximum
 
Still have to run it on Apple xServes.. which are no longer in production.. I wonder if this requirement will be listed, trying to run a bunch of Mac Pro's would not be fun, they are far too big.

Unfortunately, this wreaks of another cash grab, like Enterprise Plus was.

We've constantly encouraged customers to purchase as much RAM per host that they can afford. With how powerful CPUs are today, RAM is almost always the first constraint. Now it appears there will be many customers needing to purchase MORE licenses just to go to vSphere 5.

That is going to piss off MANY customers.
 
It's going to push a lot of people to look very hard at how they provision VMs and tools to monitor them will become very popular, very fast. Most of my customers over provision VMs, especially memory. I think we'll see that trend change.

At the moment, it appears that way, yes. It looks like SOME Apple hardware can be used (don't know which ones yet, I would assume the Mac Pro Server, but don't quote me) with vSphere5. But, due to Apple's licensing, you still cannot run OS X/OS X Server on anything other than Apple-Labeled hardware.
 
It will be interesting to see how the licenses per proc and pool of ram comes into play.

Personally I put mine on its side laying on top of the SAN it is connected to. Went from 12U to 4U.

Hrm, you did hear it right though, you're talking about virtual ram assigned to the VMs... not physical memory in the hosts. The host capacity is essentially free.

I think this is great as it places even more burden on server huggers to right size.

EDIT: you guys were talking about the conversion from the current licensing. Yeah those numbers are kind of low... 48 GB is a lot more fair than 32.

Except for the client I just installed some Cisco B250 M2 blade servers for. Each has a pair of 6 core CPUs and 192GB of RAM running vSphere Enterprise. Now, if they go to vSphere 5, they'll only be able to actively use 96GB of that RAM (if Enterprise also gets 48GB of vRAM per socket) with the new license scheme unless they purchase more licenses.

That sucks.

I can see a lot of customers staying at vSphere 4.1 indefinitely unless the licensing changes on 5.

It is 48GB per socket for Enterprise Plus.
