My system is woefully out of date, I've got some hard drives, opticals, and a case but I'm thinking I'll need new:
Mobo
CPU
PSU
RAM
VC

My thoughts on these components are:
K8N Neo2 Platinum...There's got to be some reason why everyone and their brother is getting it, right?

Edit: Or should I look forward a bit more and try for an Asus or MSI nforce4 based board with PCIe and maybe even (yeah, I know this is a budget system) SLI?

Winchester 3000+ or 3200+ with the retail 3000+ getting the nod for the moment ($1 more for an amd approved hsf, why not?). I'd toss on a XP-90 or 120 when I feel I can waste more money.

Enermax 460 Whisper II, seems a nice balance between price ($75), performance (+12v@33A) and noise...at least from reading the description, any experiences? It doesn't specifically say it's k8 compatible, is that a problem?

Ram's a tough one... 1gb of economical ram like corsair value, twinmos or kingston value, or maybe 512 now and 512 later of some good stuff like that mushkin BH-5? And would the latter even be an option, how important is it to get matched sets for dual channel use?

I'm thinking 6600GT is the way to go for a mid-range VC right now, Any specific models I should look at?

Budget? Pretty cheap.
Let's see what it's at right now:
$140 mobo (assuming the K8N Neo2, no clue on the NF4 boards)
$150 cpu
$75 psu
$155-$260 Ram
$200 VC
Totals:
$720 with cheapy ram
$825 with yummy ram.
So I guess I'd like to stay around $800.

As for whether I'll be overclocking or not, that really depends on what sort of ram I end up getting, I'd also like to replace the retail HSF before I do anything serious, but that's a small purchase that can be made later. Anyone know whether Asus or MSI has had better dimm voltage ranges on past mobos?
 
look no farther than the top of your screen, if you can build it yourself order from newegg, they have very good prices, and you should be able to get a gig of ram for about $240 well within your budget

Where to shop was not in question...The ram prices are dependent on the types of ram I am considering. $155 for 1gb of kinston/mushkin/crucial/corsair "value" memory vs. $260ish for 1gb of better TCCD/BH-5 based memory.
