I added the -big units flag to my consoles. It seemed to work at first, I got a 381 pointer and a 535 pointer, but after that I seemed to get saddled with crap AMBER WUs. Right now I have a 153 point AMBER and a 226 point GBGROMACS. Obviously, these aren't the dual core busters I had in mind.

Am I doing something wrong or is Stanford just giving me the shaft?

I think they are :) Lookie, it's in big font as well, hope that'll make up for it
 
One thing to consider in this, big wu only refers to the size of the data set and not how much processing time it will take. Even though these units might be considered big, by Stanford's benchmarking, they only garner 153 points.

 
The only true dual core "busters" I've seen were back when they were handing out the QMD core proteins for intel cores. Running 2 of those brought my friend's pentium D system to its knees. But you won't ever get any of those in the near future, QMD were intel only and have been discontinued for a while now. I've never noticed any type of slowdown on my opteron, even with two of the 600 pointers that are humming along right now. I'd consider yourself lucky, you're not picking up the small gromacs, those would really piss you off if you think your current proteins suck. :)

 
There's a couple of 1000+ pointers out there now. I haven't had one though. The current 600 pointers are nice and give me much better ppd than the 359pt Gromacs which took ~5 days on my A64 3000+
edit: woohoo, I broke into the top 400 overnight!
 
Using the bigpackets=yes setting doesn't guarantee that you'll get big WUs or that you'll get WUs with a points bonus. It just means that you *might* get them, and chances are good that you'll get a mix of big and not-big WUs. If you don't use the bigpackets=yes setting, you're guaranteed *not* to get them.

 
Its not the points per work unit you want to worry about, its the Points per Hour per Ghz.
Some of the best ones to fold where the small DGromacs.
I could do a 30 pointer in around 2 hours at 2 Ghz.

As long as I'm doing better than 2.5 PpHpG ( 1.8k PpD ) then it ok.
At the moment its around 3.3 PpHpG ( 2.4k PpD ) due to a fresh batch of big packet work units.

Perhaps it is because I discovered their evil plot. They're really using all that computing power to decode all the alien signals SETI@home has found. It is very important that the Illuminati know what the greys and reptilians are saying. And to think...I just stopped wearing my aluminum foil hat a couple weeks ago...
