I am having a very big problem with my newly built computer. My computer is fairly new although i alot of problem with my power supply (500W). While playing games, chatting etc. my computer sometimes automatically shutdown on me. I tried turning on the computer again and it will not work. My friend tells me that it is my PSU is faulty so i go and replace it with a 400W, it works fine for a week or so until it happens another 2 times. In total i have wasted 2 power suppies and the new one i got now the fan on the PSU will not spin. I am hoping i will not have to replace PSU one more time, please someone tell me what could be wrong with my computer.

I have a 120gb seagate SATA, 6800GT 256mb, 2x 512mb Kingston, P4 3.2ghz 2MB cache. I am wondering what type of power supply i might have to get if i had to replace the one im currently using.
 
Umm... If you're on your third power supply it's time to start thinking the problem may not be the power supply. :rolleyes:

When you "tried turning on the computer again." how did you do this? Did you just keep hitting the front power button? Did you unplug the PSU and plug it back in again?

Did you try bench testing that PSU outside of your PC to see if it was in fact completely dead or just dead while hooked up to your motherboard?

With the new PSU, when "it happends another 2 times" how do you remedy the situation? Are you just hitting the power button a couple more times to get it to turn on?

What kind of power supplies are these? What kind of motherboard do you have?

What kind of CPU temperatures are you seeing? What kind of voltages is the BIOS reporting?

Do you still have the first PSU so you can troubleshoot it seperate of the rest of the build? You said it was completely dead. Is it STILL completely dead?
 
I am using the gigabyte 81915P Duo Pro motherboard, i cant really fiddle around with the power supply until my friend comes over because i dont want to risk damaging my computer. My CPU temperature readings are at my normal 30-45 degrees and yes i do still have my old power supply and i will test to see if it is really dead. So if it isnt the power supply causing the problem what could be causing this problem, psu fan isnt spinning? :confused:

if hes on his third psu he should stop going to best buy and buying generic psu's :eek:

The question the Johnny asked that you must answer before we can help you is:

What were the brands and models of the two "dead" psu's.

I bet they are generic, in which case you're in luck for an easy fix.

And if it is a generic psu, can you please tell me:

Why oh why do people insist on putting a $15 psu inside a $3000 system?????? Can someone tell me?

Honestly, I'm not making fun of you (for all I know you could have had an antec), but if you did buy a generic, why did you do it?
 
Well the first power supply was an omni 500W power supply. The second and Third was generic 400W :rolleyes: . The reason for this was me and my friend had a feeling it would die on us again so whats the point of buying an expensive power supply. I dont really know if the generic or an expensive brand would have a really big impact. Is it really a big difference?

What type of power supply do you recommend i should use?
 
i live by the Antec Truepower 2.0 line. Cheap and powerful. And of course its gonna die again if u keep putting the same crap in it. Generic and expensive does make a difference. Ive had a 30 dollar psu running my comp blow out smoke in my comp :rolleyes:

Either that, or this, the Antec TruePower II 430W. You don't have to spend a fortune to get good stuff. The 550W model you quoted is an EPS12V model... overkill for such a setup.

Generic junk should stay out of your PC, it would've saved you and your friend a lot of headaches if you spent a little more to begin with. Now you know for next time, don't get the cheap shit to power your box, and if you've got any questions, we're here to answer them.
