Hey guys, I am in need of serious help.

My windows wont start anymore and win xp wont even install on my second HD to use as a master. Everytime I try to install win xp, it gives an error copying/reading the file from the HD as it installs. Sometimes its srv.sys, cdfs.sys, cdfs_file.system

Its wierd because the CD used to work fine, so I do not think it is the CD

And I get an error irqL_not_less_or_equal

Nothing new hardware wise was installed either, so I have no idea what to do.

If I reinstall Win XP on my main harddrive, will my documents be erased. That is my main concern, because I can not lose those documents at all since I need them for school.

Any idea what to do?

Thanks

:\

Change the IDE cable and try again

Cheers,

EDIT: Also post your hardware setup.

I got a BRAND new HD in there from BB, and I am still getting installation errors when I install XP. Do you think it is the cd? I get the IRQL error too once in a while, but I have no idea what that is still.

1600+ XP
512 RAM
GeForce4
SB Live
2 HD's
2 CD drives

thats about it

No idea what IRQL error is from

I take it you're still able to get into XP on your old hard drive. So go into administrative tools, computer management, then expand storage and open Disk management. XP should see the drive there and have it listed on the bottom right. Right click and on the menu you have the option to create partions. Create at least 2 partions I generally make my partions at least 40G or the drive divided in 4. Now copy all the important stuff over the the last partion on the new drive.

Also read this, I don't have time but it may help

Oh also get any bios updates. Also can you get us better specs on your system. Manufactures and models numbers.

Hi, thanks for the help

I can not get into Win XP at all. I formatted and tried to install, while copying files to my HD it says that it cant read the cd or some other error and stops it. It asks if I want to skip it, but still, it stinks.

BUT I did install Windows 98, running that now on this computer, and it installed fine.

So I am thinking it is the Windows XP CD.

Ill get back to you on the specs, gotta run to class now

Thanks!

I have seen that problem before and the fault was the memory. Run memtest to see if it comes up with anything.

Ok, thats what I saw too, just wasnt sure if that what you all were talking about. Its a long test though...how long does it take?

Just let it run for about an hour to see if it shows any errors. But most people her run it for at least 6 - 12 hours to make sure they get no errors.

I let it run from 11pm last night until 10am today.

It got to test 4.

Pass: 24%
Test: 28%
Test: #4

It give all errors in the right column as it went by though
