A friend of mine defragged his computer, Windows XP Home, Athlon 2500+, Radeon 9800 Pro, 512mb Kingston PC3200, everything has been working since we built it, and after the defrag, everything started messing up, computer would freeze, programs would crash. He tried to do a system restore, setting it back 5 days, that didn't work, he tried reinstalling xp, but it hangs up during the instalation, he rebooted, and when it says 32 minutes left: installing network, it still hangs. Anyone have any ideas, we at least just need to get some files off of there if we need to format.

Well if it hangs at installing network, i would just try and simplify the scenario and disable the Onbaord Network card, if it has one, or remove the PCI network card. Also disable/remove any other peripheral device tha is not necessary for the computer to run, just the basics. If the install succeeds then start enabling/installing the other hardware one at a time to see which causes the problem. The defrag could just be a coincidence, or you may have a damaged hard drive, or possibly faulty ram etc. it is hard to say, start with the basica install though and go from there.

I have seen this before - but it was when the memory frequency and such was messed around with in the BIOS - making the system to hot - therefore the pc would freeze.. try setting your bios back to defaults and see what happens when you try to install.
