So as the title says, i have a big ugly case (that i love) that i have cut 3 120 mm fans into, 2 in the side and a blow hole. If i have my headphones on, i cant hear my fans. But when im doing other things like watching tv or if i leave my computer on when i try to go to sleep, i have the pleasure of listening to that wonderful hum in the background. And its even worse since i live in a dorm room. So i was gonna get some new silenx fans, you know the 120 mm ones that are 14 dBA, but after reading this post in the forums, it seemed like not they way to go since they are about $25 a piece and arent silent. So then i decided that i should just get a fan controller, but i havent seen any beige fan controllers, beige case + black/silver fan controller = :rolleyes:.

So my dilema is, should i just say screw it and deal with the noise, find some fans that are silent but still push a good amount of air, or what i would like, a fan controller to quite them down. I know that i could spray paint a fan controller, but it would be kinda hard to do that in a dorm room. Oh and these are the fans that i have right now, and i would like to get a 5.25 fan controller instead of 3.5, but i have the space for both. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
 
you could use a zalman fan mate or two, if you use fans that draw reasonable current.

just as an example, each one can easily control two panaflo low fans. three panaflos would be a bit past spec on the controller.

could only control one thunderblade at a time, though. heh good old thermaltake. 78 CFM @ 21 db my hairy ass...............more like 30 db, if you're lucky.
 
Yes N H O it is a big ass case and thats why i like it so much. I can put whatever i want in there without having to worry about it not fitting. Just like my zalman 7700cu which fits with no problems what so ever. And the problem with those fan mates is that you cant really change them instantly, i would have to open up the case and change them which would be a hassle :rolleyes:
 
the fanmate is the only prefab solution that i know of that does not put a black or silver insert into one of your bays, which is why i mentioned it.

if you feel like DIYing it, then you can drill out some holes in a 5.25" bay cover, and mount rheostats into it.

i'm just tossing out ideas, and my ESP isn't so good that i know all the products that you have and have not already looked at.
 
I'd probably get a silver fan controller. I mean, it's not really that noticeable of a difference from white compared to a black controller :D. I have a silver hard drive cooler in one of my bays and it really isn't that bad looking against the beige color of my case.
 
I have one of those cases... they're fantastic! I'm using a fan controller to quiet it down. The other option is to 7v or 5v mod the fans.
 
What happened to the good old days where all you could find was beige, or maybe an off whitish case. Well i dont know if you could call it the good old days, cause everything looked the same, but then the same could be said for cases now with all the moded windows and leds and all that crap. Thats why i like this one so much, it defies the fads right now and i dont care if i scratch the hell out of it. Thats why i did cut out 3 holes for 120 fans, hell me and a couple of my friends shot his case up with a few guns just to make it different from being beige, oh and they are speed holes if anyone asks. It just seems like when all you could get was beige, i wanted something different. But now that all the cases look the same, i still want something different, but its back to the thing i didnt want in the first place. Is it me or is that just weird :confused:

Hahah... nope.. you're not weird. I'm the same way. The reason I haven't replaced the case quite yet (and I've been contemplating) is just so I can be different... by being old... hehe... that and this case was huge back in the day, and compared to today's Shuttle's, Mini computers and what not... it's gigantic! Love the space though, I can actually isolate the airflow in the bottom for my video card, and utilize the top just for the radiator. It's a very nice setup :D best $100 Cdn I've spent on a computer part yet.
 
get medium-speed 120mm Panaflo fans and run them at 7V (as in, +12V from molex to positive lead of the fan, +5V from molex to negative lead = 7V-mod). they have fluid bearing, and when running at 7V are SILENT.

btw, do not run fans @ 5V as for most fans that's below the stall point.
 
You can get a whatever color controller then drill some holes in one of your drive face plates and mount it over the controller.
