Regarding the recent BFGTech review, I was surprised at the performance of the 6600GT in single and SLI modes.
Playable settings (HL2) using an AMD 3500+:
6600GT Single: 1024x768 4xAA / 8xAF
6600GT SLI: 1280x1024 4xAA / 8xAF
In the BFG review, the 6800GT posted this playable setting:
1600x1200 2xAA / 8xAF
In the November Nvidia SLI Upgrade guide, the following playable settings were noted using an Althon 64 Fx-53:
6600GT Single: 1280x1024 4xAA / 8xAF
6600GT SLI: 1600x1200 2XAA / 16xAF
In the November review, the 6800GT was pretty much even with the 6600GT / SLI.
So, just how CPU dependent is Half-Life 2?
I'm currently running an Intel 2.4 Rambus setup with a 9800Pro. I'm playing Half-Life 2 at 1024x768 0xAA / 2xAF and it is pretty smooth. It is playable but a little choppppppy at 1280x1024. I bumped it up to 1600x1200 to see what it would look like - and I want it.
I'm sold on an AMD 3200+ / 939 (good upgrade path), but very undecided on PCI v AGP and 6600 (with an SLI upgrade path) or 6800GT.
I'm close to just getting an AGP rig, and staying with the 9800 pro until the prices on the 6800GT come down a bit....
