BFG RMA -- disappointed

Five weeks ago my then 2-month-old GeForce 8800 GTS OC2 640MB started artifacting. I'd never messed with the card so I sent it in to the store, which after verifying the problem sent it on to BFG.

After 5 weeks and all of the Christmas holidays without a gaming computer the replacement card finally arrived today. It appears to be a refurb (different packaging with just a plastic mold holding the card, no anti-static bag, scratched sticker on the heatsink) of the exact same model card right down to the 96 stream processors.

Now, normally I wouldn't complain. But I have to admit that after waiting 5 weeks for them to replace my €365 ($529) video card, I'm pretty disappointed about what I received in return.

Flame away if you want, but after this experience I seriously doubt if I'll buy from BFG again.

So what did you expect? For them to upgrade you to a GTX or something?

I guess you could always send it back and get them to RMA this one as well.

The 5 week part does suck, but I guess if you're in England I would have expected it. Ask them if they'll cross ship it next time.

The different pack is normal, although I doubt it should be scratched up. You're typically supposed to keep all the enclosed bits and so forth when you do an RMA, so they have packs that are simplified to card-only.

5 weeks sucks, but some of that can be chalked up to geography and some to the season (unless you're talking about the gap between when they received your old card and shipped your new one, in which case yes that's total shit). EVGA has always shipped my replacement within 3 days of receiving my old card, and usually the day after. From there, well, domestic shipping.

It was a different retail-type package. My original card came in a huge cardboard box, with cardboard inlays, packaged in bubble wrap and an anti-static bag.

The replacement card came in a smaller box with a plastic mold-type inlay and the card in that without any protection. In more than 10 years of building computers I've never seen a video card that wasn't at the very least wrapped in an anti-static bag.

I was told to send in everything that came with the card, btw. The only thing I didn't send in was the t-shirt.

You didn't answer the part I was most interested in - was 5 weeks the time it took between them receiving your old card and shipping the new one? If not, how long did it take them to ship? That's the part that they're reasonably responsible for.

I'm fairly certain you shouldn't use plastic mold casings together with an antistatic bag. The plastic mold seems to be in more common use for video cards lately. It's weird if you haven't seen it before and weren't expecting it, but it's no cause to worry.

Well that's just odd. Go BFG, I guess?

It was a little over 5 weeks from the time I shipped the bad card to the arrival of the replacement. I don't know exactly how long the card was at BFG as what few updates I received on the process came from the store.

Ah, I hadn't noticed that you RMAed it through the point of purchase and not with BFG directly. That would explain some of the additional delay.

Why didn't the store just exchange the card directly?

Both my new EVGA GTXs came in molded plastic with no anti-static bag.
Ugh, what a joke. Is this so they can turn around and send it to someone else!?
In fact, they do send out tested good to RMA'ers. Seen posts from many including brand new Ultra's DOA that have been RMA'd receive a used card as a replacement.

I'm not implying BFG is the only manufacturer doing this.
