is this still the overall best performing card out there? or has the GTX 295/4890 X2 eclipsed this by now? I thought for sure that this card had the highest numbers out...

Long since surpassed in the dual-GPU on-one-card market by the 4870x2/GTX 295. Still, I'd consider buying it as a backup card if I had the cash.
 
I would consider it not the best, not too far from it though. But, possibly best bang for the buck.
