BFG 6800OC core won't OC?

Hello. I'm using RivaTuner to overclock. I unlocked the extra pipes and shader, so it's at 16/6. I already changed the DisableInternalClockTest setting in the Power user tab. I thought it was OCing fine, but I noticed after running 3DMark 2003 that it had the core still at the stock 350MHz. I OCed it in RivaTuner past 400MHz and the 3DMark score didn't change and it still read 350MHz in 3DMark. The RAM overclocks accordingly, so this is only affecting the core. Is there anything I can do to overclock the core? TIA.

3DMark doesn't detect the GPU core speeds correctly...it seems to take the 2D speed.

But the score should at least increase then going from 350 to 400MHz, correct? It's still giving the same score.

EDIT: Also no FPS increase in going from 350 to 400MHz using the CS:S video stress test.

After you overclock the card with Coolbits are you hitting Apply?

I can't OC with coolbits. After it tests the setting it gives that error message (it even does this when I try to underclock the card). I got the same thing in RivaTuner before disabling the test in the power user tab mentioned above.

I also tried using PowerStrip and get the same results (it OCs according to PS, but 3DMark still reports it at 350MHz and there are no improvements in benchmarks). I locked the extra pipes again and overclocked and 3DMark reported the correct core speed (I overclocked it to 370MHz). As soon as I unlock the pipes again no matter what I use to OC, 3DMark will report it at 350MHz and I see no improvements in any benchmarks

So it seems that unlocking the extra pipes is making the core locked at 350MHz. Is there any way around this other than loading another BIOS version?

HAHAHA , I have the same card as you, and I went thrue this last week. Ok heres what you do, disable the extra pipes and shaders. After you do that overclock with Rivatuner, don't use coolbits it won't overclock that high(I tried it). When you oc with Rivatuner(great program ahaha) test it and overclock, increase by 10mhz. Until the Test fails, even though sometimes when you overclock higher the test passed(weird), that's why I was able to get a core of 415mhz and RAM of 880mhz with a 3dmark2005 score of 4069 with these driver 67.02.

Make sure in your bios your video cachable is DISABLE , I turned off Fast write. I overclocked in SYSTEM TWEAKS not in LOW-LEVEL System Tweaks. After you are satisfied with the speed of course test if you see artifacts and snowing, if all is good enable the pipes and shaders and test it again. It should work. Don't overclock with the pipes enable as you can see it won't overclocked ahahah :p . Good Luck if you need more help or question , post :) ;) . Sorry if it's confusing ahahha and long.

I tried that too. Are you sure the core is actually running at the speeds RivaTuner is showing? Here's what I mean. Right now RivaTuner is showing me this:
rivatuner.jpg

but 3DMark shows me this:
3dmark.jpg

No matter what I set it to, if the pipes are enabled 3DMark will show 351MHz on the core.

yes im sure becuase, I ran the benchmark when I go the GC, then I benchmark the card when I enable the pipes and shaders. When I got the card the score was 3100 around there, when I unlocked the pipes and shader I got a score of 3856, when I overclocked wiht the pipes and shaders disabled I got a score of 3429. Now when I applied the oc and the pipes the score is 4069. Coolbits reports the same speed as Rivatuner. Thats why is important to benchmark everything you do to be sure what you are doing is working ;) . So your also saying you tried to oc with the pipes disable? if so , do this close the pipes, put the card at stock speeds and test if you want to be sure and benchmark like I did, but if I was you I wouldn't pay to much attention to 3dmark. Is up too you. :)

Coolbits reports the same speed as RivaTuner for me too. Could you possibly check the "details" tab in 3DMark 2003 and see what it says about your core speed? Like I said, the RAM OCs fine, so that would explain the increase from 3856 to 4069. Another way to test this would be to underclock your core, but keep the RAM at same speed you always do and see how that affects the score. I'd be interested to see your results.

ok yea see 3dmark is posting the worng speed hum core on 3dmark reports core 414(correct)
RAM 877mhz(incorrect) its 880hmz. If your temps goes up thats another way you can tell, mine whent up 2 or 3 degrees idle.

Yeah...looks like your core isn't going up in speed. From you link, you have the extra pipes unlocked? So it's at 16x6, right? If that's the case, then your score should be higher at 414MHz for the core. Weird.

As an aside, it's funny that your score is 300pts higher than mine, when there's only a 2-3fps difference in the tests.

ok here it is, hope the link works

PS. THE LINKS DONT WORK I GOT THIS ONE WORKING

thats the score with the pipes and shaders and overcloked.

Are you sure the core is not throttling? Sometimes if the core clock is too high for the core to handle, it will default to original speeds.

maybe use OmniEdit to edit your BIOS to whatever speeds you want (and you know are safe) then flash to the new BIOS.

Thats what I did with my 6800GT, so I wouldnt have to mess with Coolbits each time I install a new set of drivers.

And if my freaking ram would ever get in I plan on doing to my 6800nu in my new shuttle rig, I'm building.

Yeah I'm sure. LIke I said I could run it at 400MHz core no problem with the pipes still locked. Also if that was the issue I would at least be able to underclock the core with the pipes enabled right?

I was thinking of something like that, but I didn't know any programs that could do it. So I'll check out EmniEdit; thanks. Question about that though; if my core is good for 400MHz with 12 pipes, does that mean it'll be good for 400MHz with 16 pipes? If I am able to flash it and 400MHz is too high with 16 pipes, could I possibly damage the card and not be able to flash it again to a lower speed?

edit: is there a way to flash the bios without using a boot disk (I don't have a floppy drive)?

Your core isn't guaranteed to run the 16 pipes at the same speed of 12 pipes. There was a reason one quad was disabled on your card, unless you are one of those lucky few that just happened to have a perfect GT card that they sold for 12 pipes to make up 6800nu stock.

If I scored higher maybe is the drivers im using the 67.02. Yes drivers make a difference, I tried it with another version and my score went down. I also used the demo version not the full version od 3dmark, don't know if that makes a difference ;)

So OCing without unlocking anything, just plain OCing; did you get any noticeable performance increase? I'm asking because mine is set to defaults (350/700) and was wondering if it would be worth it to OC at all. I don't intend to unlock anything, though, just OC.

Well if your saying did I notice any difference in games when I overclocked humm not really, the games I play are Roma total war, RC tycoon 3 , Far Cry, I didn't notice a difference, but according to the benchmark it went up by around 400 points. My advice to you just leave it as it is, to tell you the thruth I turn the pipes off and put everything at stock speeds. The reson is that the fan on the vc is making a rattle noise and if it fails well if I have to return it....... you get the picture..... anyway I might have to return the vc to BFG becuase the video processor is not working its seems to be a fault with all the 6800s cards, so maybe just maybe BFG in the future might allow me to return the vc,so I just don't want to oc. :)

i got 9143 in 3dmark03. is this normal for 6800 nu 16/6 not oc?

amd 2800+ althon xp i think its a barton
120gig hd
512 2700 ddr
6800 nu
what should i get if its a tad low?
325/700 btw weird thing, on rivatuner it changes sometimes. like i will have 324/702.

Specs:

2.4 (no 800FSB or HT enabled)
512MB 400Mhz
BFG 6800 OC 128MB
100GB WD SE

I went in and reenabled the disabled pipes with Riva Tuner... My 3Dmark 03 score went from 8,200+ to 94-9600 (going from memory at work which isnt good ;oP ) Have not had any luck overclocking it yet. (Both sliders are disabled) Will try suggestions posted in the beginning and see if that helps.

#1 - too little information. System specs, etc..

#2 - 3dMark has a little thing called ORB database. Search for computers with the same CPU speeds, drivers, etc... Now don't look at the 1st page, or even 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. B/c those are all people with really tweaked (overclocked) systems.

Like me, my 3.6Ghz CPU isnt a default Prescott 3.6Ghz CPU, its a 2.4C running on a 1200Mhz FSB, so it smashes most 3.6Ghz computers, and I'm in the first page or 2 of results. And a lot of those people on the 1st page of results might have supercooling/voltmods on their videocards. SO go to about the 5th-6th page of results... and if you're close to that be happy.

my system specs is listed above. i have fastwrites on. im pretty noob. i left my settings alone basicly besides unlockin my pipes and shader. maybe there is some settings i should have on/off?

UPDATE: Well I finally had some time to try and figure this out this weekend and I went ahead and modified the BIOS and it did the trick. Used nvFlash to save the old BIOS, NiBiTor to change the frequencies, then nvFlash again to load the modified BIOS. With the pipes unlocked it wouldn't do 400MHz like it did with the pipes locked (games would lockup after 20 minutes or so), so I backed it down to 390MHz and it's been working like a charm :) So anyone else that is unable to overclock after unlocking the pipes, go ahead and give these programs a whirl.

I'm very pleased with it now :D I got it at BB with HL2 for ~$250 after tax (once the rebate comes in), sold HL2 (already had it) and my 9800 Pro so I basically got it for next to nothing.
