BFG 6800 GT OC Problem

Guys,
I did a search and have seen some things similar to what is happening with my system. I think my video card is going bad. As the title say's, I have a BFG 6800 GT OC

And FYI, the BFG card I have has two fans on it and not the reference single fan they went back too. I understand the single fan cools better.

Here is what happens, I play a game and it is usually a game that is newer and taxes the card a bit, like HL 2, Far Cry, Riddick, Doom 3, and the Splinter Cell Choas Theory Demo. After I play a while all of a sudden I hear a squelch sound through my speakers and at the same time my monitor goes black. The light on it goes from green to amber like it is in standby or has no video signal.

Inside my computer case itself the blue light on the video card goes out like it turns itself off but everything else in the case is on. All fans including the led colored fan on the northbridge. Still power to the comp.

Hitting the on/off button on the monitor does nothing. I have to power the system off and reboot for the video to come back up. It is not the monitor. I have had this happen with a CRT attached to the system and also with a new LCD attached.

Does that sound like the video card going out? Does it sound like it is overheating for some reason? Since I hear the squelch sound through the speakers I wondered about the sound card but the light does go off on the video card.

I can play older games that don't really tax the card too much with no proble. I have played Thief 2 metal age. quite a bit, no trouble. No problem with Unreal Tournament 2004 but it does not have a lot of dynamic lighting and shadows etc to render.

Any ideas would be helpful. May be time to call up BFG.

Curious, what happens when a processor gets to hot and they turn off? Does it shut the whole computer down?

My specs in case it helps.

MSI Neo FIS2R Mobo
1 gig Hyper X ram PC 3200
Audigy 2 Sound card
Antec 480 pure power
Pentium 4 3.0
Western Digital Raptors in Raid 0
the usual DVD, CD Burner, floppy, and zip drive.
Logitech 5.1 speakers

Nothing on the system is overclocked.

My thanks

If the light goes off on the card and the screen goes black, that's BAD :(
sounds like you've got a dud card. I doubt it's a power issue because you've got a nice PSU and usually when a PSU is overtaxed, the whole system goes down, not just the graphics card.

The squelch you hear in the speakers could be a burst of electrical interference from the card suddenly losing power (a lot of power).

Check the molex connections and see if switching connectors helps, otherwise you might be in for an RMA.

Sorry dude, that's a sad story!

Thanks for the comments guys. Trying another Molex did not help.

I called BFG today and got the RMA in the works. The guy on the phone had me check some voltages but finally just said to send it back for replacement. Wasn't painful at all. The only thing that is a prob is that I have to send the card back first before they replace it. And that means I will have to dig out an old video card that may not run my new Dell 2405. Oh well, will see. I might have a 5900 card around here somewhere. That might run it. Hope I get a new one and not a refurb.

yea thayll send you a new card BFG has the best support around

just curious how long have you had the card??? i also have the one with two fans and i play doom3, hl2, cs:s, and farcry. i havent had any issues but i have a 120 mil fan blowing on my vid card. im just wondering if itted be worth it to get a 3rd party cooling system... tell me what you guys thing... also the customer service guy from bfg that i talked to was an idiot. i was having driver issues i installed the drivers that came on the disk and was scoring a measily 2700 in 3dmark 05, i called bfg to see what drivers they reccomended but the guy tryed to tell me that 2700 was a standard score for the 6800 gt on 3dmark 05. 10 minutes later after trying my 5th set of drivers i scored 5k. so the moral is dont expect them to know anything  or youll be dissapointed.

Another note here. Got home last night and turned on the comp, No video signal at all and the lights on the BFG were out. The thing just died. Completely dead. Guess the gaming prob was just the early symptoms.

I overnighted it to BFG early this morning. Hope I get a quick turn around. Did find my 5900 MSI card and it still works and runs my Dell 2405 just fine. :D

Will let ya know any details

Oh and Spike, I bought the card I believe it was last September. Has been working fine until fairly recently.

thats about the same time i bought my card, and i have the same cooler you do. Damn; hope it stands up (or maybe not, i doidle fairly hi w/ 68c)

Well I overnighted my card in and they shipped out the new one the same day they received my old one. Ought to be back up to speed pretty soon.

Bit of a side note here though. I always find it odd when one problem creates another one but you don't know what the cause of the other problem is.

During the last few days when my 6800 gt was going out I had a problem crop up with my Norton Firewall 2005. Each time I logged on to my DSL connection the small window popped up telling me that the firewall was creating a new rule for Microsoft Generic Host for Win32 Process.I think that is the SVCHost we see when we open the task manager. However the same flipping little window would pop up maybe 4 or 5 times in a row in quick succession with the same info. When I went to open a browser, any browser, IE or Firefox it was as if I was not on the web at all . Page could not be found. I could go nowhere. Even Symantec Live Update would not work.

But when I disabled the firewall everything worked. Strange. I went into firewall settings to see what rule created was screwing up the works. Nothing jumped out so I deleted the complete rule set for the Generic Host and let it re-write the rules. No help. So I uninstalled and re-installed Norton Firewall 2005.

Well everything worked fine. OK, so some glitch had gummed it up. This was all happening while my video card was going downhill. The firewall lasted a bit more than a day and then the window creating a rule for Microsoft Generic Host for win 32 Precess cropped up again. Was maddening, that thing would pop up over and over 6, 8, 10 times in quick succession. And my internet connection was blocked again unless I turned off the firewall. Un-install and re-install, this time it did not work. I did not have time to toy with it at the time as duty called. So I left it for later. When I came home later that was when my video card was dead. So I pulled it out to RMA overnight it to BGF.

Popped in my old MSI 5900 card and......yeah.........no Firewall trouble anymore. Nothing wrong.....works perfectly. And it has now been perfect since last Thursday.

Either the firewall mysteriously fixed itself...which I doubt. Or the trouble was the video card going out and the system here was scramble braining the firewall trying to tell me there was trouble.

I swear as much as I love them, computers are a never ending source of weirdness. ;)

Well it is a done deal. My new BFG 6800 GT OC got here wednesday but I wasn't home. But I was when it got here Thursday. It was a brand new card in OEM packaging. I installed it to try it out and so far everything is perfect and wonderful.

BFG is as you guys said, they delivered on the warranty and getting the card to me. A pretty nice deal. This is my first BFG card but with support like this it will not be my last.

Really great company. :)

I had this happen to me a few times..but I wasnt playing any games yet..it was just teh start menu of counter strike source...I reinstalled drivers and problem solved :)
